Default Small interior mod

I bought a rear center console from eBay several years ago because it was very cheap. I finally got around to using it. I was tired of constantly touching up the paint and I felt that there was just too much Savannah beige.

I've never used Plastidip before and wanted to give it a try. It looks pretty good but I doubt that it's going to hold up. If it doesn't, I'll just peel it off and use a different paint.

I added the non-smoker tray and the updated Oddments tray hinge.

I originally painted the non-smoker tray in aluminum as well but decided to see how it looked in contrasting black, so i peeled it off.

I like the look.

I dipped my console a few months ago. Seems to be holding up well.

Funny thing - Check out the price online for the ashtray - just the removable part. It's $200.

They're still available; Suncoast has them for $84.95.

That's crazy!

I recently purchased the non-smoker plug for my car but I can't get it to fit in the socket itself?!

You most likely have the original European lighter socket. Replace it with the US version. Easy and cheap and your 12 volt accessories won't keep falling out.

The funny thing is that the 12V accessories I've already used work fine! That's why I can't understand why the non-smoker plug doesn't fit..

Were the plugs loose? Mine would work but the plugs would fall out or lose contact as I was driving.

Has anyone attempted to spray the center/plastic bits themselves instead of buying the whole unit?

No I'm not going to. I know it's not expensive for the plastic bits (well, the little smoke cup is $100), but more of a general curiosity.

Quick edit; regular spray paint and not plastidip rubberized paint.

996.1 or 996.2? IIRC, the .1 had the Euro socket, the .2 has the US socket. On my car (2000 Cab), about half the plugs I used would fit fine, but the other half would fall out. Swapping the Euro socket for the US socket resolved the uncertainty.

OP ... please keep us posted as to how this lasts over time. My console gas several scuffs and I've been thinking about replacement, repaint, etc.

Is the plug too wide for the socket? If it is, maybe you already have the US socket but the non-smoker plug is European.

I will. I experimented a bit with the Plasti-dip. I initially dipped the smoker delete tray and then chipped some paint off it. I was able to patch it very well by smoothing out the high edges with Goo Gone and respraying a small area. For smaller nicks you can use a Q-tip and Goo Gone to remove the sharp edges and then blot on more plasti-dip with a Q-tip or foam brush. Just spray some into a paper cup and dip the brush into that. There are some good videos on YouTube.

Everything in the upper center console pops out pretty easily. There are good DIYs for removing the rear center console.

If you're talking about pieces that have the soft-touch paint on them you'll want to strip and/or sand them before painting.
