You will need to remove the trim.

1. Remove the two plastic black covers (either with a fingernail or a small screw driver) there is a gap to fit a screw driver
2. Remove the Phillips head screws under each one of the covers
3. Pry the cover off (there are two clips towards the front of the car holding it in place)

You may need to source a new cover but it depends on your year and interior colour for the part number but see here (number 8):

Quite common, I think. I fixed mine with a couple of drops of superglue.

Just had this happen on my 996. Pulled cover and previous repair used four sheet metal screws through old tabs to kinda hold it in place.

This is some one of the most brittle plastic I've encountered on an interior. I also had one busted clip/tab. Everything is setting up with some medium CA glue right now. If the switch ever goes bad, I will have to likely locate a new switch and trim plate now, or cut the old switch out.

Silly auto trim pieces....

My car had this issue when I bought it.

The switch was also all scratched up from someone trying to pry it back out, instead of just pulling down the cover.

After my initial jury rig didn't work, I ended up just buying a new part for the cover (996-555-557-06 A03 for my black interior) and the switch (996-613-147-10-A05).

It was a little annoying having to spend that much to fix such a "minor" issue, but it feels very satisfying to have it fixed properly. The new, unscratched soft touch plastic that clips in super solidly w/ the brand new clips, very satisfying. Easy DIY.

I was doing a quick research on the Porsche 996 sunroof motor and came across the motor used on an infinity G35 wich looks exactly the same as the Porsche one. Both are Siemens with part numbers 770.60003. Of course a fraction of the cost on eBay! Has anyone here tried to retrofit one of these motors on their Porsche?
