Default K16 to GT28R BB turbo swap?

Hi guys,

Anyone here swapped out their OEM K16's with Garrett GT28R ball-bearing turbo's?

My project might take a slightly different path and I might sell my newly rebuild K16/16G's and fit a pair of GT28R turbo's on instead. Will probably just get ones with integral wastegates too, for simplicity sake. Just need to change the KKK flange to a GT25 flange.

Would be great if you could post some pics of the heat exchanger mod to suit the GT28R turbo's

I'm told the difference is night and day between the K16's and the GT28R units.

Anyone care to comment based on experience with their cars?

Are you going to leave the water-cooled cartridge empty? Or you are planning to use some separate water cooling system for the turbos?

Leaving the water ports open. It's only a street car. Never tracked.

Vivid Racing did the complete rebuild with upgraded actuators and 16G wheel etc. Never used since rebuild done!

Just trying to weigh up the cost of the GT conversion first.

I have installed multiple sets of Gt28RS and Tial A28 turbos. The latter is a GT2868. It uses a custom billet compressor that is better suited to the 993. Spool gets better and top end too. It's one of those rare instances that you have your cake and eat it too. The Tial A28 also has custom exhaust housings that make it a bolt on proposition.

I like to feed oil into the water cooled side as well. This helps carry away some heat and prevents the water jacket from having a air barrier which is a great insulator. I use restrictors to keep the flow reasonable and not effect the oil pressure to the rest of the motor.

If you want to use off the shelf stick with the GTX1867. You will need to do a LOT of work to make ot fit though. Unless you're doing custom headers and exhaust stick with the Tial A28.

Hi MarinS4,

I will be doing a custom exhaust anyway so if I go with off the shelf Garrett GT/GTX turbo's I'd need to modify the collector flange on the heat exchangers with T25 flanges and possibly v-bands for external 38mm Tial wastegates.

Do you know how clockable the compressors are on the GT28R with integral wastegates? Does the bracket minimize clocking range?

Clocking of the compressors is not the issue. The problem you will have is the T25 exhaust housing hitting the valve cover. There is not enough room to make the flange work they way you want to.

You are welcome to forge on ahead and run into the same dead end we did.

You can either buy the Tial A28's or make custom headers for the off the shelf GT/GTX turbos. Trying to fit the off the shelf GT/GTX turbos to factory headers is not gonna happen from what I remember.
