AJ turbo non-airbag wheel on 993tt
Kept this wheel when I sold my 87 carrera. Had just bought it before I sold the car, it was brand new. I kept admiring it on my shelf, wondering if it would fit (ad the same time detesting the stock wheel, to skinny, some scuffing of the leather).
I've always like the styling of this wheel more than any airbag wheel I've seen (there either not thick or the air bag part is two big).
Got it to fit by using a couple of washers to shim it correctly.
For now I don't have an airbag, horn, or self canceling signals anymore.
The gauges are harder to see (I'll have rotate the speedo and temp gauges a bit).
But chicks dig it and it is nice and fat (the wheel not the chicks).
Think I'll use it for a while.

That is one of the best looking wheels I've seen in a Porsche. But I don't think I'd want to give up the horn (wimpy as it is) or the cancelling turn signals. Or would I......

Nice wheel. Perfect for track work with a detachable yoke adapter (which would also solve the turn signal cancel problem, I guess.
If you're posting because you're thinking of getting a 993 wheel, Carnewal has a pic of a great three spoke that's more "period" for the 993 era.

But it's expensive once you buy the wheel (870 Euro) plus the airbag (410 Euro) but it does look nice (assuming you like froufrou carbon, at least it's real and functional, not just cosmetic...)

That is a nice wheel. I have been lookin at it for some time wondering if I could get the horn and turn signal issues ironed out. That wheel at AJ-USA is reasoanbly priced at a little over $300. I'm comtemplating not dealing with the hassle (although I do think it looks great) and just going with

Is Carnewal's wheel, the one listed above any different than the 996 wheel? Meaning if I buy a 996 wheel, will I have fitment problems? I have read of others who have done that but not heard anything about problems they have had.

Bob, I installed that exact wheel a year ago and really like it. It has a very nice feel. I also changed my horn to the classic french horn sounding one at the same time.
My original OEM wheel was carbon fibre and I didn't like that it became somewhat slippery if there was the slightest perspiration on my hands.

Hey that could be my interior, except for the carbon fiber on the front dash, the stereo, and the silver guages.... Looks nice john.
The one BIG gotcha that bothers me with that wheel is the plain center. You have added a Porsche crest which I think looks great BTW and really finishes it nicely. I have seen some damage caused by items installed onto the covers after the airbags deployed. So as a personal choice, I won't install anything onto an airbag equiped cover. That makes this decision really tough for me...

There has been alot of debate regards the badge on the wheel.
Before I installed mine I consulted a retired surgeon here who is a renound specialist in vehiclular accidents and restraint systems (Austalian based but I met him on holiday in Vanuatu). His comments were quite revealing: The airbag cover is fixed by a hinge and therefore opens out during deployment and as long as the adhesive bond is of high quality and strength he did not see an incremental risk in having the badge fitted.
The really interesting thing he noted was: Most facial injuries caused by airbag deployment occur due to the construction, material and proerties of the drivers eye wear! Apparently this is VERY common and much more harmful than any other debri from the steering column!!
That got me thinking! Installed the badge and bought myself some better driving glasses! Imagine what a set of steel frame with colycrabonate can do to your nose bridge when hit by a very powerful plastic bag!

Macca, I have experienced personal situations on the racetrack where these objects on the airbag cover did indeed fly off with compelling force. In one case causing a large and deep gash in the chin guard to a helmet. Without this chin guard, the personal damage could have been catastrophic.
Based upon these incidences that I was at, I can not put yself at that risk. So not debate, arguments, etc. My personal preference is not to have any type fo stick on in the middle of my airbag..
