Default Ruf Turbo R narrowbody

I recall reading (in Excellence, I think) an article from a few years ago mentioning Ruf doing a Turbo R conversion for one of the Porsche family members. This conversion was done to a non-turbo 993 -- and the finished car maintained the standard 993 rear spoiler, as the owner wanted a more discete appearance. Does anybody know anything more about this car (or one like it)? With the Ruf intercoolers in the rear corners, I am wondering how a sufficient quantity of air is directed to them.

Thanks for any input. I was just daydreaming about that car...

I don't have any idea. Can't see how on a narrow body you could get enough room to mount the required components, mainly the intercooler. Don't see how it would fit under the deck lid, nor in the fenderwells like the 996 family.

Got me...

Not sure, but I think that was mentioned in the article about the RUF 3400S (Boxster) and I think the reference was to conversion of a C4S to Turbo power.

Now with a widebody, and Turbo S ducts in the rear fenders, and a modified exhaust I would say it is doable...

The turbo R still retains the intercooler under the rear spoiler which is reason being you can use back the original spoiler.
Only the CTR2 has its intercoolers by the fenders.

Thanks guys!
Yes, you're right -- it was a sidebar to the 3400S article.

Here's the quote from Excellence Magazine. Alois Ruf must have been very proud:

"In 1998, Oliver Porsche, son of Butzi and grandson of Ferry Porsche, brought his personal 993 Carrera 4 to us to be turbocharged," said Alois with a smile. "He wanted stealth version of the Turbo R, so we installed a 490-hp twin-turbo engine in his car with a special intercooler arrangement like the original CTR, using one unit in each inner wing. When the rear spoiler is up, the differential pressure draws air through the intercoolers and out of the rear."

I have a TT and would love to move to an RS wing rather than the TT item. BUT it would require different intercooler set-up.

I saw this quote in Excellence as well but what does it mean: "using one unit in each inner wing" ???

I saw the article and the intercoolers were tucked in the rear fenders. Guess the inner fender is a wing maybe???

Yes the inner fender is a wing. I had a 1988 Ruf CTR and saw that the placement involved quite a lot of chassis fabrication to get the intercoolers to fit - they could clearly be seen when the engine cover was up tucked into the inner fender with lots of metal being reworked to get them in. I was told (could well have been sour grapes) by ex Ruf technician Reinhold Schmirler that the system was very innefficient and it was an idea originally tried by Porsche but rejected due to its inefficiency. Ruf had NACA inlets on the outside of the wings (fenders) on his prototype for inlet air, but on my production model there were no ducts and the air was drawn from underneath. When I consulted Ruf about the adjustable boost **** and what was a safe level (it went from about 0.8 bar to 1.3 bar) they said that over 1.1 bar would cause too much heat and be pointless. This arrangement obviously now works in the 996tt so it looks like they worked out how to get the air to flow efficiently through the I/Cs but I think it would be hard to replicate this set up on a 993 'cos of the space available.

I thought that was the BTR2 (Carrera 2) and BTR4 (Carrera 4). Here's a link:

Very understated and sexy!

Does Ruf still do these conversions?

Just in case I find the regular C2 or C4 needs a little "more". I am coming off a TT, after all.

Louis, I love that RS wing as well, in fact I've been fantasizing about starting a 993 RS-look alike project (w/perhaps a 3.8 litre kit) for a long time, since before I picked up the 993TT. Man, I just love the 993 series cars.

I think the narrowbody and a 993TT engine would be super great too. Too bad Porsche didnt offer that package to regular buyers. No matter, I picked up a 18K 993TT engine and transmission and I am actively looking for a 993 Cabriolet 6speed Silver/Arena Red/Green to install the engine and perhaps bump up to 500HP and just add a TECHART body kit and have an 11second convertible. The engine sheetmetal has all been powdercoated and the entire engine detailed in the meantime. It will be a Corvette Viper Hunter Killer on the street.
