The Seat Search if offcially on now...
OK, I'm finally ready to start searching for a permanent seat solution in my car. Currently I am borrowing a set of 964 sport seats and while they are a very good feeling seat the look and the fact that they aren't mine means they will have to go soon.
The seats I am considering are Full Leather Recaro Sportster CS, Cobra Misano, 997 Sport(w/ Alcantara centers), & of' course 996tt Sport seats.
If you have anything listed above in your 993 and happen to have pics will you please post for me. I know the fitment of Sportsters is tight(removal of seat tilt **** must be done).
Also, if you know of anything used for sale please PM me as I am in the active market right now. Must be Black color.
Thanks,
Chad

^^^^ Because people want ridiculous amounts of money for them. Also, I don't know how they compare in terms of lateral support. I feel the stock 993 seats are terrible in this regard. I hate to invest 4-5K in something that is almost the same.
Also, I'm not going for period correctness as this isn't a stock car. At this point I'm probably going to decide between 997GT3 RS/Sport seats as some here have and the Sportster CS. I also just figured out that the new Sportsters have one of the adjustment ***** removed so that should take away the need to modify the seat to fit. now just need to figure out the best sliders...

I hate to say this but you have to try the seats before you decide. It's such a personal thing how they work with your build, your back etc. Not easy perhaps but considering the amount of time you will spend in them it's a good thing to do IMHO. GL

How important is the recline function? I would def go for the Recaro Pole Positions. They look and feel great, very period correct.

V I agree. I've sat in the Sportsters and liked them. I also own a 997 but have not sat in 997 GT3 seats yet.
I need a folding seat as my 3yr old son rides in the back and there is no way I am denying him of this. He enjoys this car way too much.

I might be unusual, but I do not like leather seats - prefer cloth. They are better in cold/hot temperatures, less slippery, and breath better on the track.
But like I said, most Porsche owners just love their leather-wear...

Mike

I'm in the central valley with HB sport seats in my car. If you are can't seem to find someone with them in their car near by I'd be happy to meet up some time to show you mine and see if the lateral support is adequate. I love them.
Unfortunately, I don't know about any of the other choices so this is all I can offer...

Bryan

I'm also fan of cloth. Early (1995) 993 sport seats would be a nice option, they have really huge bolsters, I believe they were used in 968 and 964 models as well, but i'm not sure. I agree 993 hardbacks are way overpriced and they're not as supportive as the earlier sport seats, like the 964 RS america seats in cloth, those are my favorite. My car has hardbacks and they're OK but no way would I pay anyone more than 2k for those.

Great timing for this post. I am also looking to replace the aging, uncomfortable seats in my 1996 Turbo..
Let me make a few comments on what I have learned and experience so far.
997 Sport Seats:
- easy "drop in" with the Brey-Kraus (BKauto.com) 997/996 -> 993 adapters
-Only manual versions work, "power" seats will take an electrical engineer to wire.. and no memory..
- Heat is also in question as the function is controlled via the HVAC unit and CAN bus
996 seats..
- Easy drop in with adaptors..
- Heat is direct wire and switchable
- Manual are best.. not sure on wiring the power.. electrician needed ?
993 Sports seats.. $$$$$$ if you can find them, and likely with wear
Recaro: General Rule.. the Manual seat back ***** make them too wide for the narrow tunnel side. Power seats work..
Sportster: Awesome looking, heated, BUT they are too wide, not "approved" by Recaro for 993, but many have up them in there.. Here is a reply from a Recaro dealer about Recaros in a 993. I plan the Sport Topline.. heated, Cooled, tilt, height and Lumbar.. Only lack fore-Aft. All leather ~$5000 with 993 seat belt receivers, 993 wiring harness (for plug and play, NO splicing on the car side), and mounting hardware/rails.
COMMENTS FROM RECARO:
""" The Recaro Cross Sportster CS, I would Recommend the Sportster CS for this application because the Cross Sportster seats require the use of a 0,76.3(NT) Outside Handle Slider, and the 993 has a narrow floorboard which limits seat choice to ones that work with the 0.70.9(NT) Inside Handle Sliders. The Sportster CS does have a wide back which limits the distance the seat can slide back.
The Recaro ErgoMed, this seat also requires the 0.76.3(NT) Outside Handle Slider which is not recommended for tight fit vehicles.
The Recaro OrthoPed, Is a good fit for the vehicle since it’s does not have manual recline *****, and can use the 0.70.9(NT) Inside Handle Sliders.
Other common seats for this application would be the Specialist M or S, the Expert M or S and the Speed (S). These may require slight modification by removing the tunnel side recline **** and cutting of the attached bar which can then be fitted with a block off cap.
There are Vehicle Adapter Brackets available for the 1974-1998 Porsche 911, part #244 (Driver) and #245 (Passenger). These can be made to use Tabbed or Flat Sliders. Flat Sliders will give you the lowest seat height installation for taller occupants or someone that needs extra headroom to clear a helmet. The Tabbed Slider version will site roughly ¾” higher at the lowest point and will be able to be installed at one of the 3 installation heights."""

You might take a look at the Konig K5000 line of seats. These are the seats used by Ruf. They are VERY supportive, very strong, recline and flip forward, and an easy mount in the 993 with no modifications required. Downsides: they are fairly heavy and won't fit a large person very well.

Felker,
Thanks for your post. What's interesting is the Sportster CS is 1.2 inches narrower in the seat width column.
Also in terms of the 997 sport does the power tilt also not work? So which modules came with just manual front/back and tilt?

The seat back recline is simple power on the manual seats. The 997 have manual height and fore/aft with Power back recline .. i.e. No side **** for recline..
The seats that are multiple adjustable all have memory.. That is the problem.. Deleting the memory " branch" of the electrical connections and just powering them... Sounds simple until you get into the feedback loops etc.
