Question Cabin filter... Uh oh. How important?

It just occurred to me that I haven't replaced the Cabin Filter in Rufus in... oh lets just say its been a while. I assume that this filters the air coming through the heater/AC system, which seems unimportant, but maybe I don't really understand this, and should order a filter for my next service. So... what does it do, and how important is it? Thanks, and don't yell at me.

I your case it is very important. The cabin fiter actually filters the air EXITING the passenger compartment. Based on your history of chronic flatulence, the California Air Resources Board requests you renew it immediately.

Scott... thanks for the laugh. Perilously close to the truth though that may be.

Hate to say this, but simce i like to dtive with the windows and often the roof open i do not see the point of these filters other than making money for porsche. I just blow them out with compressed air and put them back in ....

Mike,
So perhaps I can get an answer from you... does it filter the incoming air to the heat and A/C? How hard are they to replace or, as you do, "refresh"? How much are the dang things anyway? And the only downside to not replacing/refreshing is one might breathe dirty air? <edit> Or, if they work like an ordinary air filter, the air may not be "dirtier", simply less air will pass through?

See? You're yelling at me. Ok Ok, I think I'll go get them and replace them myself. It looks like an hour and a half for the first one, 10 minutes for the next.

Hi Steve, no way it takes only 15 minutes to replace them but it is not that difficult. Good luck

As for Mellor, that was actually pretty funny

Hi Scott,

Come on up to Santa Cruz, replace my filters, and enjoy a nice dinner on me! Yes, Mellor is a very funny guy. I offer as evidence his attempt to train his cat to use the downstairs toilet. He got this far, before Karen put her foot down.

Easy to remove, remember them being a PIA to install if you've never done before.

its really a 15 min job.

tools....flat head screwdriver

1. pop frunk lid
2. remove plastic cover at the rear of the frunk...it just pulls up and out from the weatherstripping.
3. use screwdriver to pop clip off airbox covers that hold wiring.
4. use fingers to unscrew the flat circular nut.
5. use screw driver to pop off the clip on the outside bottom edge of the airbox lid.
6. pull up and out the lid.
7. lift old filter straight out, put new filter straight in...tab pointing straight up.
8. replace lid, making sure to seat the side clips (takes some pushing/effort
9. tighten nut
10. replace clip
11. repeat on other side
12. replace cover.

Its really that easy.

This is the step that usually stymies people - the lid has to be pushed down perfectly straight or it will bind. Some guys come into the shop and, after 30 minutes with their heads under the front hood, finally admit they need help.

Cheers,

Mike

Thanks Quad. Good summary.

Now to the important part of the thread - does the cat use the toilet?

I was hoping Mellor would pipe in with his version of the infamous "cat training" exercise. My recollection is that the cat had Mellor trained (up to a point), and the photo proudly shows the next step on the training. That's when Karen (Mellor's WWAAAYYYYY better half) put her foot down and made him dismantle the contraption so that others might have a chance at that toilet.

The cat still laughs about this.

Where does one buy those cabin filters for $25/pair?
