Whelp . . . not happy to post something like this so soon. Regularly, check oil always good level and clean. Then CEL goes on while cruising on freeway. Consider immediate shut down but oil level via gauge appeared fine, engine sounded fine and no smoke out back so I continued 5 miles to destination. Checked the dip stick, oil level fine but on paper towel goldish colored flakes. Fuel had about 1/2 Sunoco street legal 100 in it but no aggressive driving or track time. Flat bed is arriving in morning to bring to reputable shop. I'm the 3rd owner fwiw. I did have to take it on a short journey from my parking garage to another the last time I drove it roughly 2 miles. Worst case/best case scenarios? Actually, I'm pretty good at imagining the worst case scenarios.

are you sure they are brass, not small ceramic pieces? sorry to hear this....

you may be freaking out over nothing. I had some brass looking particles, freaked, and did a search and it seems that this can be the result of the dipstick rubbing the tube where it enters the tank.

They are gold in color. Don't know the code yet. My brother has a cheapy OBD iphone reader app I can use but not sure if it can display codes. I'll see if I can run it after Halloween chores. I have never noticed the shavings before and I was always looking pretty closely since the car is new to me. CEL + metal filings in oil very worrisome. It was sounding and running fine though. Doing the flat bed as a precaution.

Okay hoping it's the liner in the dip stick tube. CEL could be the fuel mix or short trip I took earlier. Working on the codes! Just wondering if I should cancel the flat bed. It's not cheap.

For what it's worth my cruise control has not worked for some time. I'm canceling the flat bed ($240) and gamble my bank account the debris from the stick is the bronze coating in the dip stick tube. I'll upload a picture tomorrow.

Cleared the P1140 code. Drove from San Mateo to San Fran and code did not go off again. Basically, my reasoning on driving the car, beside the poor over night arrangements I had at my siblings, was these filings should have been caught in the filter if it were an internal engine issue. There were a lot of these small particles - not sure if the photo makes that clear. I tried doing a search prior to posting all this but perhaps the term "brass" messed it up. I can bring in my Blackstone oil beaker too now to do a real oil analysis. Hopefully, pib993 just had another false alarm.

That oil looks pretty dirty regardless, I'd drain/change the oil then you'd have a better oil sample. I think that code's been posted before, (? by ca993twin) ? do you have a non stock air filter. Is your ecu stock?

All stock. I did look up the code and it can be a number of things . . . MAF related, throttle position, cruise control etc. Not sure why the oil looks so dirty on the blue towel and not the white - white was a second or third swipe. Oil should be less than 3000 miles.

You can change the oil as a precaution and sent the oil in to Blackstone for testing - that would tell you what is in the oil vs what might have rubbed off on the dipstick, etc.

Also, oil is supposed to be dirty. Changing oil cause its dirty is silly.

Those shavings looked just like mine.

If your oil pressure is good and your blackstone test comes back with no unusual wear metals, don't worry about it.

for reference, I had those shavings 2 years and probably 12k miles ago, and the engine has displayed no bearing or related issues.
