Default Anybody know this car?

I'm considering the following car.

1997 993TT
5500 miles
Spotless
Orig except for iPOD connect to factory stereo

Here's the checkered past:

- $24K body damange repaired in 1999. Fenders, hood. Spin out through wooden fence by original owner
- Engine rebuild 1,000 miles ago due to improper oiling. There is a story that it was caused by using 0-30 weight oil. Sounds odd to me.
- 2nd owner is a collector who had the car when the engine problem occurred. He traded for another 993TT in black. This owner has some nice cars including a Ferrari 250.
- Now at a very reputable collector/restorer showroom in California.

$75K asking

That is way too much money for a car that has had $24k in damages.
There are plenty out there for $75k without a checkered past. If you do proceed...use caution.

$24K is far more than fenders and hood... does the seller have any pictures of the damage? For $75K you can find an excellent no-stories car with 40-45K miles. Ultra-low mileage is not necessarily a good thing unless you're collecting.

If you are concerned about these issues and are asking here, don't you think a future buyer would do the same?

It sounds like a turd.

Wasn't that Canepa car a turbo s?

"spotless" and "$24K of body repairs" and "engine rebuild" do not belong in the same sentence

pass...

Don't even think about buying this car. 993turbos and stories like this are not a good match.

Thanks for warning me off of this car.

This car is at Canepa and matches the description of a long rennlist post about a buyer later finding out about a salvage title.

I'll keep shopping. I have a deposit on a 991 that I'll take if my used buying experience doesn't improve.

993TT is more of a sports car, more unique and will hold value better than a new 991 - but at least I'll know what I've bought.

Any experiences out there with Sloan or R&H Motor Car Group?

Sloan is well regarded on here but his cars are top dollar and mostly on consignment (I think). Him and Wilhoit usually have some great examples but no deals.
what are you looking for?
beware the low miles cars can have problems with seals drying up btw. Also if you buy a low miles car every mile decreases the value in large proportions.
Good luck with the search. 991s are nice but totally different car than a 993 turbo.

The car was totaled and sent to a salvage yard in Brooklyn. (that salvage yard has since been closed as they got in trouble for being a "chop shop") Car was later purchased by somebody in the NY area who rebuilt the car (the person that did all the body works thinks but has no proof the parts supplied to rebuild the car are all stolen). The car then sat for several years in the basement of this individual in NY. It was then advertised in Hemmings motors news for sale and the owner properly disclosed that it was a repaired salvage car. A nice guy in Utah bought it sight unseen (I dont remember exact price but I think it was around $40k). This new owner then had the motor worked on by a highly regarded Porsche mechanic in the NY area as it was not running at the time. After this person in Utah got the car he soon later lost his job and sold it to Canepa. During the process of getting his Utah title there was an error and they issued a clean Utah title rather than salvage. When this owner sold the car to Bruce he was concerned that he was selling a salvage car with a clean title and did not want this ever to come back and bite him in the ***. So he did the smart thing, and required Bruce to sign a salvage disclosure agreement as part of the bill of sale. This was signed by Bruce and was on Canepa Design letter head. I dont remember the exact purchase price but I think Bruce bought it for around $45k or so. Bruce then advertised the car as a mint collection piece out of a high end collector and sold it to me for top $$. He did tell me some story that one fender had a minor scratch but was repainted by Porsche prior to the first owner ever taking delivery. After many lies from this piece of scum Bruce Canepa he eventually bought the car back when I left him little choice. I had put on new tires, clear bra when I took delivery. Who has owned the car since, or what has happened to it I have no clue.
