Default Help Gemballa skirt removal... thoughts?

Well the car is at the shop and we are starting to look at the side skirt option. My hope was a simple (well even not so simple) side skirt removal and go back to stock... stock side skirts rockers I believe in tact beneath.

My shop is apprehensive (thats OK, they are very conservative and take their times and like to warn me about the "what ifs" that could come up...) of what lies beneath and the full job to fix the mods to the panels done when the rockers were installed. I am still gathering data so please anyone chime in.

I guess to install such side skirts the sheetmetal on the car needs to be cut to accommodate the air duct. (about 100x300 mm on the lower back edge of the fender (the cut line in in the groove) also the inner fender plastic covers need to be cut, this data I just gathered.... so talking front and rear fenders need work etc.. or worse case replace? To much work for me to replace right now and have a hard time not believing they cant be fixed...heard of someone simply welding on patches, prep and finish etc...

Here is a pick f the car....these were fully integrated into the rocker and sill so no seem etc... so realize there will be work and prep there. Just don't want to open up a can of worms having to replace actual fenders; front or rear or both? I can't imagine that is what it would take but I don't know these cars even close to the level of many of you all...

that said any good recommendations of body shops that do more then just prep and paint and do it well; I would love to have in the RI , Ma area... thanks all, this has me a bit concerned as just a much bigger job then I had hoped for removing these skirts... I know keeping them is an option, not ruling that out but want to get as much data as I can on removal before I make the final call.. Thanks again...

I really really do appreciate the help...advise, words of wisdom etc

Default side skirts

I like the stock look, the only aftermarket side skirt I have liked for 993 cars was by techart,,, maybe swapping for them would be an easier solution? But it never seems to be that easy...

i wouldn't touch especially if the install of the sideskirt was well done. your car has aggressive front and rear bumpers with the Turbo S wing and aftermarket wheels so IMO the skirts are not out of place. you might be just creating more headache for yourself for taking the skirts out. goodluck and congrats on the beautiful ride.

Have Ron look at it at Advanced Autobody in Wakefield R.I. Give him a call and send him some pictures to get some ideas. He has worked on all my cars, Bob

You should contact Sid, the owner of this black RUF Turbo Cab .. he bought it a few months ago and it had the very same skirts on it. He obviously will know what has to be done to return the car to stock Turbo rockers/quarters:

yes I have been in touch.... Thanks for the heads up, I pretty much been in touch with anyone and everyone that has had them on their cars... some have never removed, or did not watch install process or bought car with them on etc...

They require holes cut in sheet metal for proper install.... so its not a remove, prep, paint by any means... will have to patch the holes, and I want it done correctly, the right way.... sure any body shop would agree to attack it but I am researching the best ones in the area, this car will only go to the best shops for work getting sorted while in my hands.

I will keep all posted on progress, thanks all..

I would hold off for now, research it and revisit it during the long cold winter.
I would lean towards leaving them alone.

I kinda agree... Just leave them be for now and enjoy the car since you just got it. I actually don't mind the look of the skirts.. could be worse.. like a fast and furious paint job on a Ruf

Enjoy the car and do some research. I think you'll know who to bring it to when you come across the right shop that can handle something like this. Until then, get out there and get that car sideways

Here's a thread posted Saturday trying to sell a new pair with a great picture of the hole required in the rear sill area to clear the cooling ducts. You're right, not a simple repair ... you're going to want to make sure the body shop is well versed in weld-through etching primer and follow-on seam sealers and stone chip applications but it's not rocket science, a good shop should be able to patch it in like it never happened.

Thanks, I did review this and this is best case scenerio, worse case they clipped the entire front fenders at the base... either way I have to deal with it as these rockers/side skirts to me just are not my style. will keep all posted, thanks again

Default Update with pics?

Any update on this? My car also has these side skirts and wondered what your car looked like once removed to see the cut marks.

Any update or pics would be helpful.

Thanks,
Bryan

Default Gemballa skirt removal

This c ar had Gemballa skirts. When I took them off I found the hole that couldn't be repaired without painting the side. The welding to fill the hole will burn the surrounding paint - hence repaint. Rather than repaint the side I opted for a full respray. IOW, it was a costly fix for something that really wasn't too bad.

Looks nice. I think the actual 'cut lines" vary by installer. Also not sure if it changes from NB to Turbo or not.

Hopefully, mickfluff can respond as well about his travels down that path.

Thanks for your response as well.
