While I was in there savings
I just purchased a Guards Red/Classic Grey with 22k miles from Maplewood Porsche a few week back. During the PPI, I learned it needed:
1. Steering Rack
- Rebuilt Rack = $552
- Labor to Install = $420
- 4 Wheel Alignment = $160
2. Clutch Accumulator and Slave (while your in there)
Accumulator = $190
Slave = $1025
Labor = 313
3. Check valves
Check valve kit = $420
Labor = $537
I had the dealer discount $4k off the price for these items. If any newbie
would like me to post prices of each, I can check the receipt and gladly help the next person.
Last week, I had them fix the above but also:
4. Replace Spark Plugs = $98 plus labor $161
5. Do a compression/leakdown = $89.50
Total bill came to roughly $4200, so near spot on with extras even.
The point of my post was to let know like myself that can't seem to turn a wrench, that if your mechanic is on the up-and-up, he will charge you significant less because of the overlap that is occurring anyway.
Sp while your in there, really pays off.
Example: Cost of Compression/Leakdown there is $600.
Since I already was in there replacing plugs $89.50
Same thing with the plugs, replacing was the cost of plugs and 1 hour
labor = $250 versus near $900
Anyway, happy days to get car back and it feels fantastic!

That's not the clutch, it's the accumulator.
Clutch was fine, accumulator is common wear item. People normally
replace the slave cylinder while your in there.
Steering rack was "weeping", and considered another weak
area on the 993.
Better safe than sorry, plus I worked it into the deal on the car.

Thanks for the clarification
Your car color combo is the same as mine. Love it
How did these cars stay under the radar? It seems like they came and went. I almost bought one in 2000, but went with the "new" 996 instead. Not sure what I was thinking...

Thanks guys for the help and compliments. It really worked out nicely.
I do have one question if I can.
I had them put in new check valves but not new Turbo oil lines. Should I have?
During the PPI, the wrench said I have the "older" assuming stock type and they can
wear out and need replaced....?
Can someone shed some light on the truth on that? How much are these, and easy wrench item or take into shop?
Thanks!

The turbo oil lines do not wear out, however there are some aftermarket lines that include check valves and anti siphon shapes that will prevent oil from "backing" into the turbos. I'll bet the tech was talking about the turbo intercooler hoses. They can wear out, and the 97 turbos came with better materials. They can be identified by the orange ends. You may also want to update the clamps tho the "Breeze" constant torque style to prevent tearing those hoses and to keep them from popping off.
