993TT as daily driver
I'm considering getting a 993TT, but it would need to serve as a daily driver and I have a few questions I thought I'd post to the forum:
1) Once sorted out, approximately what would you estimate yearly maintenance to be assuming no major non-routine expenses? Annual mileage would be 10-12K per year.
2) What are the bigger ticket expenses/problem areas (say $2K and up) to watch out for?
3) What would it take to get a 96 or 97 to a reliable 500 - 550 HP?
Thanks in advance for the responses!

1) With that mileage, figure 2 oil changes at about $200 each, plus a set of rear tires ($1,000) and alignment ($150). Every other year you'll need front tires too ($700), plus a a brake fluid flush ($140). One year #3 you'll need to budget for spark plugs (not cheap). This is bare-bones and assumes nothing unscheduled.
2)
Clutch- over $2K
Accum and Slave- could get pretty close to that number
A leaky turbo, just one, would exceed $2K
Anything trans realted.
Mis a shift, and need a top-end done, would exceed $12K
3)
???
+$10,000ish

I just bought a 993TT as a DD. I figured I wanted to enjoy driving every day and keep my Riv Blue cab as the summer time fun and garage queen.
To the good points above, if your doing lots of stop and go, congested traffic area, not sure you'll get the use out of it. I live in Colorado, lots of open roads so it brings a tad more opportunity. I also don't care about depreciation hit.
Can't think of anything else, except "great choice!"

Thanks for the info. If it is possible to stay between $3-5K/yr in expenses once the car is sorted out that would be a big plus.
What kind of Turbos are in the 993TT? Can they swapped out with the K16 or K24 variants used in the 996TT or are they completely different? If different, can they still be purchased new?
The car will be in FL most of the time, NYC occasionally. My other consideration is a 997TT which will fulfill all the requirements on the checklist but without the intangible factor present in the older 911s.

I daily drove my 993tt for a week, usually live in city but decided to commute for a few weeks with new baby. After three days of commuting, was ready for 997. Not bad for a day or two a week, but pain in the *** every day.
For you new Yorkers, this is on fun roads... Merritt, to Henry Hudson, west side, etc.

I don't believe anybody really uses ANY kind of Porsche turbo as a DD in Manhattan. I had my RUF turboR there for almost three years. When I drove it at all, it was to the closest street to get off the island. Otherwise, why bother? Even with a fairly stiff suspension on NY's infamousy and deservedly bad roads it wasn't too bad. And, while not trying to stir up yet another can of worms, 550 real/reliable HP for $10,000 seems a bit of a stretch. Really, really, really just my opinion. YRMV, contents may settle upon arrival, yada, yada, yada. You have a different opinion ... I don't care.

The car will be predominantly in FL where I also spend a lot of time. If I bring it up to NYC, it will be used for out of city fun trips and not commuting. I don't think there's any car that's particularly well suited to Manhattan driving!
I seem to recall that there was someone on here that had 200K + miles on their 993TT in the Bay Area. If accurate, I imagine that it must have been a daily driver.
With regards to performance upgrades, I've seen a wide range in cost from different tuners for supposedly similarly performance levels. This leads me to believe that it might not be as straightforward to increase hp/torque as it is with a 996 or 997TT.

97 turbo as dd since 98...at 296K miles...and nothing but smiles.
they run better when driven imo and are cheaper to maintain. "15K service intervals" under $1K..."30K service intervals" about $1500.
oil change every 15K...per factory recommendation. you want to change more frequently...go ahead...i don't see need w synthetic oil.
clutch outlasted the first engine...as did turbos...swapped turbo s engine from salvaged s at 245K.
new turbos are available...last time i checked...they were about $1500 ea.
to each his own...but for me...docile when you want it...power when you need it...great as a dd.

My previous 993 turbo, "AKA Frank" was a daily driver and Drivers Ed track car.
He had a FVD 490 kit with K24 turbos, ECU, 5 Bar fuel pressure regulator, Andial Intercooler Cargraphics oil cooler and FVD CAT bypasses and suspension upgrades. I commuted from Thousand Oaks CA to Port Hueneme either down the 101 freeway or the back way down Portrero road.
Other than the suspension being too stiff due to being lowered (which can totally be cured with GT2 uprights and control arms) the car was fine. And what an adventure when I went the back way.
