I haven't done this but I have heard others who put the trickle charger/maintainer on a timer so it is only on for about 5 hours a day so that it uses less power, and less chance it overcharges your battery.

They all shut themselves off. A timer makes no difference on the current drawn because it still takes the same amount of power to keep the battery charged. One of my charger's wires was starting to show the ill effects of running in the bottom of the door. I want my windows closed and would never run it through there. Why the H would anyone bother going to the trouble of hooking it up to the battery when you can plug it into the cigarette lighter?? That's all........
