Congrats Brad.
How do you like the Protomotive exhaust?
You have 50+hp more than mine but our dynograph looks almost identical.

Does anyone know why there's a dip in the torque curve at around 4000rpm?

Default spec

Look good. I'm just about to fit the A28's to mine as well.
What is the full spec of your engine?

Brad, congrats on the new setup. And good luck at the track this weekend. My car car is at todds and I'm running water/ meth as well. He's in the process of upgrading and tuning. I would be very interested to see how well the Water/meth works on the track. I have a dash daq monitoring egts/afr/ temp at the air box/before intercooler and more.I'm set up to prove weather or not the water/meth works.

I should have the car back in the couple of weeks and would like to compare benefits of the water/meth.

At very least we can come up with a way to remove the rust from the cylinders...lol

At the badger bmw driving weekend my friend drove the car yesterday. It's scary being a passenger in the car as the rear tires break loose more now. It builds boost very quickly and basically it can be left in one gear lower on the track full weight. I drove it once on track today. Just toodled a few laps then broke the trans. It runs cool but this weekend we had cool weather. Folks at the track REALLY liked the exhaust whistle. Opinions varied on the exhaust tips. The muffler has decent welds, is tucked nicely so it can't be seen, I'm happy. The motor is 3.8, twin plug, evo cams, rusting away.. Here's a picture of how much windshield washer fluid was consumed w/ about 1.5 tanks of gas

Brad sorry to hear about your gearbox, those are expensive repairs but a good opportunity to change to stronger internals.

I like this GT28 setup, and I am surprised that Todd went this way TBH, a few years back when I was loking for ways to keep my temps low, he was not a true believer of Meth/Water setups when I inquired about them, or maybe it was the tuning complexity for my engine done from a distance. I wish you could log some AFRs and IATs with a Race Technology DL1 or similar, it would be great learning to all to understand how these setups behave under load.

I think recent good results w/ these turbos on the 996 made Todd more open to going this route Jean. Same with the meth/water injection.
The KMR guys weren't too keen on the meth/water setup but put it in at my request.
It's funny you should mention the DL1. There's one that's been hiding somewhere in my garage for several years. I'll find it and get some data.

Your car isn't very thirsty

My ~500hp 3.3L turbo can empty that exact same AEM tank in less than half a tank of fuel when driven hard on the track! Granted my local track has a very long front straight (~150mph) and I love chasing down new "fast" cars!

good question about longivity - what's the compression ratio on this engine ? was there something special done to address the heat / cylinder head issues ?

I can't believe you got rid of your Holcombe 993. Ugh, she was a beauty. Sorry I don't know what the compression ratio is and the water injection is for controlling the heat. It's being slowly put out to pasture for a graceful retirement w/ occasional wine/track tasting tours.

I'm glad you're happy with the way that everything turned out We were thrilled when we heard about the power it was making after the tune. I was a little sad that I only had a couple hours to detail it until your truckie showed up. If you or anyone else has any unanswered questions about the build, feel free to ask!

Brad,

Had you talked to Todd about going with Tial Alpha GT30's instead of GT28's?

I previously had standard Garrett GT2871's but now currently have standard Garrett GT3076's in my 993TT setup with basically your motor (3.8L Mahle P/C, twin plugs, GT2 Evo billet cams, Pauter rods), built by Protosport-although not with meth. We have talked about changing the turbo's from the regular Garrett's to the Tial Alpha's (GT3076's), BTW also interestingly the same turbo's we will be using on my 996TTSCab insane, 4.2L, pump gas 800HP conversion, in progress as I write this.

I would surmise the bigger GT30 Tial Alpha turbo versus the equivalent Tial Alpha 28 would have a sweet spot encompassing a "wider" rpm range for the track, but could still spool relatively fast? Either way, tons of fun is guaranteed for all.

Great results! The Tial A28 is proving to be the best of both worlds. Love the area under the curve!

The A28 is a lot different than the Gt2871. The compressor is a billet 68mm using the latest extended tip technology. It also has a better flowing hot side housing. The same is true when comparing the A30 to a GT3076.

The A30 would make more power on the upper end. If it were a track only car I would do A30's. For the street/track the A28 are soooo much fun.

Your project keeps getting more and more interesting. I 'd like to see what's left of the cylinder walls with the 4.2L. Sure you don't want to stuff in the Cayenne Turbo engine instead?

Curious, how much are these TiAL Alpha28 turbo's?
