Question Dumb question about muffler bypass pipes

If muffler bypass pipes simply eliminate the mufflers and extend the cats out to the normal exhaust point, couldn't you just remove the mufflers and just let the exhaust terminate at the cat (i.e no mufflers or muffler bypass pipes)?

what would be the problem doing this other than cosmetics?

now to give a little context;

i believe there is something wrong with one of my stock mufflers (the inner packing is oil soaked due to a bonehead oil overfill incident and i cant get rid of the smell of burning oil from that side of the exhaust)

so, i am considering either sport mufflers or muffler bypass. i'm not looking for super loud exhaust tone. so, does it make sense in order to get a feel for what muffler bypasses would sould like, to just remove the mufflers and tool around a bit without anything post-cat?

Im gonna go out on a limb here and say you have another problem. Overfilling oil wont soak any exhaust packing.

I'm not sure its a hot idea to run hot exhaust straight into what amounts to a plastic bumper with some tinfoil on the inside of it. The muffler bypasses are relatively cheap and they do actually make a bit of a difference with respect to sound.

As for your overfill problem, you may have definitely gotten some oil into your mufflers. You could just get another set of stock mufflers. I sold a set for about $250.

Thanks for the tips. Any idea where I could find a stock one used? I already checked eBay and this board but no joy.

I have the Fabspeed bypass pipes. I love the sound. Based on your statement above, I think you may find them too loud. Just an FYI.

There are a lot of guys on this forum that just give away old parts to other forum members... kind of our way of "paying-it-forward" for all the kind acts done for us by other Rennlisters. Consider joining?

Sure....just not sure what you mean by "joining." i'm already a member of the forum. is there something else i need to join?

also, once i receive the used mufflers, should i just change the one i need or should I bother changing both so they are a "matched set" for whatever its worth?

they mean signing up for a paid membership.

I'd change both. Even if only one pipe smoked, you probably have oil in both.

Default techart mufflers

I'm taking a set of high-flow Techarts (quiet version) w/tips & low miles off right now, e-mail me if you want em' michaelgt3@gmail.com. It's gonna run me about $850 for new tips & labor, so I'm gonna try to get $850 for all.

I had a pair of fabspeed mufflers develop holes in them which melted the bumper at the track. I would not run sans mufflers or muffler bypasses for safety reasons.

I think what Steve is saying by "paying it forward" is for Badabing to someday give a part away (free or below market) that he's not using/needing.

Thats what I'll do even though this whole issue started with smoking out of just the driver side tailpipe.........none from passenger.

I also signed up for a paid membership. The wealth of information and helpfulness here is beyond belief.
