I think they used porsche gauge but I'll check tomorrow ..

I fact I agree with Quadcammer since there is no difference in pressure reading whether the oil is hot or cold.

Jean , I went today and bought castrol 1-60 synthetic as this is the only option I have right now for synthetic. Do they sell motul v300 15-50 synthetic or mobil v twin 20-50 synthetic ? If yes plz give me there contact number if u have it plz.

Quadcammer, I went to the garage today they used regular gauge but tomorrow they well test again with mechanical gauge ,, what's really bad is that they know all these facts but I think there too lazy or don't care to do the correct diagnose !! When I asked them to do it they know all about it but they do it because I ask them to ,, I think it's not my job to do all that ... But I really care about my car .. And thx to you guys I now have all this knowledge ...

Thx Jean, I think castrol edge competition 10w-60 is excellent too. We used it today on my car with 2 new filters .. about 11 liters ,, and the mechanic working on my car said that the oil pressure reached 5 when the car was cold ..the other thing is I noticed that the engine temperature was a bit high the gauge pointed to 9 o'clock .. I asked if the front cooler fan working, he checked and it wasn't so they will check the relay and fan tomorrow. The temperature was 40 C today it was really hot when he was filling the car with oil..

after testing with mechanical gauge the pressure was 5 ..we did change the two oil pressure valve and it didnt fix the problem, they changed the oil pressure sensor and now the problem is solved ( this was the first thing i asked them to check and they told me that they checked with a new oil pressure sensor and it didnt fix the problem ) now after al the things we replace wich we didnt need to it was the faulty oil pressure sensor causing the incorrect reading. thx for your help guys i really appreciate it. here is a pic of the mechanical guage

It seems they changed (swapped) the oil pressure gauge at first, the gauge is the one on your dash board, and they said it didn't fix the problem.
The oil pressure sensor on the engine is made in Czech republic and they are not accurate at all. I have a few some brand new, and every single one reads different than the other, no two match.
We've had several threads on NA 993's concerning your issue, here is one of many:

https://rennlist.com/forums/993-foru...-pressure.html

Ideally it should read slightly above the 5 bar mark to reflect the low pressure stage of the pump which is 5.2 bar at cold start or at rpm above 1500 or 2k.
Castrol Edge 10W-60 is what I use in my car since years, and it is ideal with its good zddp levels for 993. API/SH-SJ
It is also sold at every BMW dealer under the name Castrol TWS for all M-Power cars (TWS for Ten Weight Sixty or 10W-60))

Behold that Castrol also sells the Castrol Edge Sport 10W-60 which is Very bad for the 993 since it is an API/SM oil, for late generation cars.
Price for the Castrol Edge 10w-60 or TWS varies a lot since you cannot find it everywhere. I purchase it by the cases from ebay germany for 8 euros/lt. At BMW it sells up to 35 euros/lt
regards

Hi geolab,
I am using Castrol Edge Sport 10W-60 in my 1996 993 turbo , and today I used it in my 1996 993 targa , as this is the only option available here in Kuwait for synthetic oil ( weather is very hot her it reaches 50C in June).
Is the oil bad for both cars or only the NA 993 ?

Using 20W50 Mobil 1 V-Twin, my idle pressure is 3 bar, and 5 bar when driving.

The oil you are using is not adequate for the 993, turbo or not. The 993 engine needs oil with certain levels of additives to function properly. Reduced levels of zddp cause premature camshaft problems in the 993 engines. Those additives have been reduced in todays oils because of pollution restrictions. Here is a good explanatory link

http://www.lnengineering.com/oil.html

I have posted on this thread to inform you that you can find the oil Castrol 10w-60 at any BMW dealer, in Kuwait too normally. It is called castrol TWS.

wow that seems high, especially at idle.

As geo mentioned above, these gauges really aren't terribly accurate.

Your'e right, Oliver, I was wrong. I rechecked today.

Fresh from an oil change, hot oil, it is at about 1.5 bar at idle. Driving, the pressure is a smidge below 5 bar. The red needle just touches the bottom of the black hash mark on 5.
