Switching between syn oil & conventional
Guys, I understand the details of which specific lubricants to use has been beaten to death here. That said I do have a specific question surrounding the subject.
A few years back I switched from a synthetic oil to a dino to take advantage of the detergents that went missing from the newer versions of synthetics. I'm thinking of switching back once again to a synthetic that contains the necessary detergents.
Does switching back to a synthetic after using the dino for the last three oil changes, in general, pose any ill effects? Also, I realize not all of the oil drains with each oil change, so is the mixing of left over remnants in the system cause for any concern?
Thanks.

Ncp, I agree with the above. What oil are you thinking about switching to? I highly recommend the Mobil 1 V-Twin 20-50.
I also recommend doing used oil analysis (UOA's) with a lab like Blackstone.

I have read that since synthetic oil is thinner, it can seep out gaskets that are used to dino. this might only apply to old dry gaskets. otherwise no reason to worry. which dino oil were you using?

After much reading on the subject, I'm switching to V Twin or a 50/50 mix with M1 15W-50 to increase Zn & P while decreasing Ca. There was some indication that keeping some of the latter extended the life of the oil?

Hey guys, thanks for your responses. It's been a few days since I've been on.
Since new, I've always been on Mobile 1, then Mobile 1 with an additive starting about six years ago, then finally a complete switch two years ago to Swepco Dino. My intention is exactly as some of you have done and recommended (per Kevin) by going to Mobile V-Twin 20-50. I don't put a ton of miles on the car (17k to date) but change fluid yearly, regardless.
Thanks for the input!

[QUOTE]Nick, the V-Twin 20W50 is easy to find, at places like AutoZone. It is in the small oil section for motorcycles, not the huge oil display racks. It is about $10 per quart plus taxes./QUOTE]
Perfect. That'll work. Thanks for the info!
