Tachs are very pricey, new or used. I'd go back to the seller.

Exactly. Probably over $800. Premier had to know the boost readout was not working and did not disclose this to you. And the person who did the PPI blew it too (if you even did one). How could they miss this? Who did your PPI? It would be good to know, so others may avoid this in the furture.

Sounds like you bought the car sight unseen. I could never do that.

Talk to Chris (the owner) and ask them to make this right for you. You paid a large premium to purchase through them. Good luck.

I'll be sure to let you guys know what happens. I have no doubt Chris will make all right. I really haven't had anything other than a pleasant experience with Premier thus far.

I did the thing you shouldn't do in purchasing a used 911 and skipped the PPI, I spoke to the former 5 year owner about the car at length and relied on Premier's reputation. Those two facts coupled with the fact that the prior owner purchased the car at +14k miles from Willhoit gave me a measure of confidence in the car's originality and quality. If the car had been in a larger market I would have gotten a PPI but didn't feel it was necessary in this case.

HUGE mistake. Sorry to say. But with the proper love & attention (and cash) this can be resolved during the ownership experience. Sounds like you are that kind of new owner. Good news for your Turbo.

I'm not aware of Premier having a stellar, let along a good, reputation on Rennlist, or other sites for that matter. Can you point me to anything specific? During my due dilegence process a couple years ago, I ranked them pretty much middle-of-the-road. I also encountered 2-3 Turbos that the owners purchased from Premier, and they were not very pleased with their post purchase ownership experience.

I'm not convinced that a PPI would have caught such a subtle(sneaky?) defect.

You're probably right, but with "Recent Service and 100 Point Inspection Done" (from the website's ad), one must wonder which 100 points are checked.

A couple years (at least) back Charlie B. (WHB Porsche) put together a rigorous checklist for potential 993TT buyers. Although, I don't recall if this was on Charlie's list I think it makes sense to add it, if it isn't there.

I'm sure it should have been caught by a diligent inspection if for not other reason than to see if the OBD was reading boost at all. However, the only reason I noticed it straight away is because when I had a 964 Turbo, I used to leave the gauge on the boost display as my default display. If this were my first turbo, I probably wouldn't have known the difference. In any event, if this is the biggest issue I have with the car buying sight unseen, I'll be fortunate as it seems like a relatively easy fix (swap with right gauge).

A PPI should catch everything no matter how small. My car was mint factory original and they still spent 3 hours on it. They picked up a weak light in the rear brake bar and the incorrect cigarette lighter!

I was always told, that during the test drive of a 993 Turbo, to have the car in 2 or 3rd gear, and to accelerate. The boost should build to 0.8 bar rapidly. So, the buyer or the person doing the PPI should have caught this.

If this was missed. What else was also missed?

I used to do this on the test drive because it was recommended in all the "how to buy" material. Not sure how an expert could miss it....

I bought my 993TT from Premier about 3.5 yrs ago from Chris. It was a good experience and I even got them to split the 30K service with me. Car unseed just a tone of photos. I did however get a PPI done on the vehicle although it had only 23K on it.

I've heard this too and it was one of the first things I did before buying my car. Its a "seat of your pants" check to make sure the turbos are doing what they're supposed to do. One would think anyone doing a PPI (or dealer inspection) would do the same or at least look for the boost setting to verify the turbos where functioning. Like others have said go back to the seller and have them make it right. The tachometer is expensive to replace and frankly shouldn't be something you have to mess with. You may want to do a post purchase PPI to make sure there aren't other issues lurking... Just my .02 worth.
