Cool Introduction - 1996 Arena Red Turbo

Hi All,

Just wanted to introduce myself. Purchased a 1996 993 Turbo in arena red last week. At Powertech (Rockaway, NJ) getting some work done: Bilstein HDs/alignment, new belts (wrong ones on car), new oil fan resistor, Slave cylinder (pentosin leak), oil change (with OEM filters, right turbo was leaking) and winter rubber.

Car has 37K miles on it, purchased from an Audi dealer in NJ - don't think they knew what they had, as i got a very very tasty price!!

Car will be a pleasure driver, with a few track days a year. Definitely eyeing this as a car I will have for the future... so will be more of a collectible car for me.

Pics...

Question I have is it has a kenwood radio from 1997, want to replace it to a stock CDR-210... is this fairly easy to do? Thoughts..?

Welcome to the club! Looks like a great example..like the stock ride height!!

As for your question as long as the factory amp is still residing under the passenger seat and stock
plugs are in dash it should be straight forward...make sure amp coax is attached and speakers still
plugged to amp....viola factory sound!

My first TT was Arena Red ,kills bugs FAST! Bert

First, nice buy

Did you consider the PSS10 instead? Probably a better choice for when you want to transition from pleasure driver to track days when needed

Go with the CDR-220 instead. If wires weren't cut for the Kenwood install, should be an easy swap.

I did consider PSS10 or H&R springs w/ bilsteins... but I wanted to keep the car as stock as possible... so figured just replace the monroe shocks with the Bilsteins.

Also, mechanic is going to reduce the ride height with the bilsteins - said he can get it lower by 0.5 inch.

Regarding CDR-220... i thought it was not a direct built in? Only cdr-210, thats what SW Stereo said... I need to see if wires were cut as well...

Thanks, Ross

Ross.... Nice car, congrates. If you going to track it differently go with the PSS10s or at the very least M030 springs to go with the Bilstien HDs. You'll want to drop it to ROW levels for stability at speed.

As far as the CDR 220, it is a direct swap for the CDR 210. You just have to remove the cage the 210 is in. In all likelihood it is already gone. If the wires have been cut you can buy an aftermarket kit to bring it back to stock so the CDR 220 will work.

Congrats on the car. Looks like an awesome example. Love the sports seats.

Just my $0.02 on the suspension:

If you're swapping the dampeners the suspension won't be stock anymore. There is zero value in the stock suspension anyway because a) the OEM dampeners for the US cars were absolute crap and lasted for only 20-40k and b) the 4x4 look of the OEM suspension is courtesy of DOT and has nothing to do with how the factory wanted to set up these cars (the ROW cars have shorter springs).

You may want to do a bit of research on the forum before you make a final decision on suspension. Many people have rushed into it only to spend lots of time and $$$ to do it all over again down the road. Keep in mind that about half of the expense is installation and alignment. PSS10 offer the most flexibility and adjustablility. If you go with dampeners and springs, you may want to consider buying the ROW M030 springs.

I grew up about 10 min from that Audi dealer. Good luck with it. I'd save yourself the winter rubber. buy good summer rubber and buy a used pick-up with the $1000 bucks. awd does not make these cars good in the snow, & if it gets slick out there the last thing you want is to be stopped & have some idiot hit you in the business end of your shiny new toy. (Trust me there are plenty here in the northeast - I was driving from right by there in Mendham to NYC sunday, just as the the snow started (before it got bad - in 45 miles, 1 accident completely stopped I-78 e for an hour. and the rest of the trip I saw 10 other accidents which all but destroyed over 35 cars). I was in a '98 bmw 323i convertible with crap tires - arguably one of the worst cars in the snow and made it fine - but I was terrified of being cleaned out by any one of thousands of other morons.
