Default What year 993TT to buy???

Hi all,

This is my first post on the Porsche forum. I'm looking to buy in to either a '94 964 3.6 Turbo or a 993TT.

I promise I won't ask which of those 2 to get. I'm trying to line up test drives for each.

I did a search and couldn't come up with anything solid so I'm gonna ask a question I can't imagine hasn't been asked a billion times here:

Which year 993TT should I buy? It seams that there are more '96 and '97's on the market then '95 or '98. Wikipedia has some comment about the '97 and '98 having a beafier transmission and that the '96 has a locked ECU and can't be reflashed, which I can't imagine.

SO: Is any year ok, or is there a best year?

Thanks!

-Matt

PS- if this question annoys you, I'm sorry. Try to keep the flames to a minimum.

No 95 or 98 turbos in the US. No real difference between 96 and 97, find the mileage, condition, color combo and price that suits you and don't worry about the year.

97's are preferred only because of the ECU and strengthened mainshaft (in the gbx) but really both years are virtually the same and like mentioned above, judge purely by condition, color combo and PPI results.

Is the '96 ECU an issue if I plan on bringing the car to a well staffed Porsche speed shop for some work to increase performance and HP?

Thanks?

Excellent, you've made it over to the 993 turbo forum as advised

Thanks! The search is on.
Now give search a try again and let the fun and toy search begin

Also, strap in tight, the mod slope can be very slippery

Largely depends who you ask. But the common response is that the 97ecu is easier to re-program.

I was originally shopping for a '97 simply because it was the last year of production but I went with a '96 because of the condition, the reputation of the dealer and of course the PPI results.

Agree with above. With a 13 to 14 year old car I would look for the best example you can afford.

The search function on this site has tons of information. You can lose track of time very quickly once you get into it.

Good luck and keep us posted.

pftt. I've had both 96 and 97. The little light over the key-hole on the dash is a MUST HAVE. (I'm joking.)

Buy the best you can find as the others have said. More people can tune a 97 ECU than a 96, but a 96 can be done. Most cars will have the updateed intercooler hoses by now. The so called "beefier" first gear is still a bit delicate if you try and do smokey burnouts.

Year doesn't matter but try and get metallic black. They're faster!

Thats what sold me on my 97

But with the 97's one must put up with the clutch switch to start the car, which both my main bearings (thrust) and I hate..
