Default Garrett GT turbos ......

I have had fantastic results running garrett GT2860 turbos on my 993 turbo conversion. They spool faster and pull harder to redline than any K16 based hybrid I have ever driven. I see the 996tt guys over at 6speed have adopted these yet I don't see anyone around here doing the same. I am curious as to why? The new Tial housings make them a simple bolt on solution.

Longevity problems? I've heard the Garretts have ball bearings, which are great for response but don't last like the KKKs.

^From one on my favorite movies:

*****: What the hell you need ball bearings for?

Fletch: Awww, come on guys, it's so simple maybe you need a refresher course. [leans arm on hot engine part, then jumps away] Heyya! It's all ball bearings nowadays. Now you prepare that Fetzer valve with some 3-in-1 oil and some gauze pads, and I'm gonna need 'bout ten quarts of anti-freeze, preferably Prestone. No, no make that Quaker State.

tuning is the only reason there isn't already a set of tial alpha's on my car...

don't want to go stand alone and me5 doesn't get the attention it used to so our options for new turbo tuning are pretty much BYOT.

i agree that those tial alpha's with super light billet wheels look mightly mighty sexy :-)

That bad rap came from when guys would not plumb the cooling side of the turbo. If you plumb in the cooling side (split from oil feed) you don't have any issues. One of the local cars has 70k on his Gt turbos and still going strong.

Are you on wayot?

Tuning is not as hard as you think. I bought a base program from Protomotive, logged it with my LM 1 & LM3. I sent it back to get recalibrated based on the logs
and now the tune is perfect.

Most people over here are a bit wary of hype. If you can get a data logged 60-130 run, there are some Rennlisters who can tell you exactly how those turbos stack up to K16 hybrids. I'm not disputing you, but I'm also not going to drop coin on something unproven.

Hoping to have a dyno comparing my engine w/ a28's to the old k24 hybrids in a month or so. I think they're the real deal.

I know of a very reputable, PCA tech who has a couple of 993 Race cars he has been tinkering with for years. After going motec, traction control, & some top secret custom design intercooler, he is now installing Garrets on his 993 GT2 - just saying.

I think the reason people stay away from them is that they are not a direct bolt-on out of the box.

lol lot's of coolaid around here

Ball bearing >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>kkk journal bearing. Anything else you've been told is just plain wrong. Being told not to plumb the cooling side of the turbo? That is also just plain wrong.

I went with k24/18g's bc of tuning and thats it

You will be thrilled!

I would think with your 3.8 setup you would be better off with the A30's. I have a data log from a 3.8 motor running A30's if you want to see it.

Here is a 996tt that went from K24/18g to A28. http://www.6speedonline.com/forums/9...o-results.html

A30's would give you more top end power but not as responsive down low.

Follow the results from the 996tt crowd and you will have your answers. They have done the K16 and K24 hybrids in the past and moved on to the garretts. Lots of dynos and 60-130 over there for you to sift through. The 993tt is the same basic motor. Overall numbers will be down for us but the delta remains the same.

Drive over to SCARGO and get a ride in one of the many A28 and A30 cars. You will not forget it. Hell I would give you a ride in mine but comparing a VRAM motor to 993tt motor is not fair. At 10psi of boost you would be shocked with performance.
