Question Infrared monitoring standard?

Hi Guys. Is infrared monitoring an option on '96 993tt's and how does one know if it is present - without setting it off of course? Page 23 of my manual has the interior light between the sun visors and describes the infrared monitoring as if it is standard. As you know the '96 tt has interior lights above each door and there is no coverage of this arrangement in the manual. Thanks...

It was a $216 option. If you have a center light above the mirror then you have the infrared monitoring option.

A Passive InfraRed sensor (PIR sensor) is an electronic device that measures infrared (IR) light radiating from objects in its field of view. PIR sensors are often used in the construction of PIR-based motion detectors. Apparent motion is detected when an infrared source with one temperature, such as a human, passes in front of an infrared source with another temperature, such as a wall.

All objects emit what is known as black body radiation. It is usually infrared radiation that is invisible to the human eye but can be detected by electronic devices designed for such a purpose. The term passive in this instance means that the PIR device does not emit an infrared beam but merely passively accepts incoming infrared radiation. “Infra” meaning below our ability to detect it visually, and “Red” because this color represents the lowest energy level that our eyes can sense before it becomes invisible. Thus, infrared means below the energy level of the color red, and applies to many sources of invisible energy.

(Gotta love Wikipedia.)

Um, yes nice, but, um, why would you want it in your car?

I have it. The only advantage I can see is it gives me another interior light over the mirror.

^^ Me too, but I didn't know before this thread and checked my COA. So, basically my PO paid $216 for an additional interior light?

Yeah. That's a deal. For my Boxster S they wanted $700+ for foot well lights. Go figure.

As you know Danny, I shopped for 3 years and none of the cars I looked at had the centre light. I'd hate to have the alarm go off in the middle of the night if a bloody mouse got in my car!

better to have the alarm go off than to go to the car in the am and see a mouse tore up the interior or chewed the wiring harness.
