Thumbs up Bob Chapman picks 993tt over two 700HP 997tt's

Check out Bob Chapman's article "First Verse" in the June issue of Excellence where he compares a moderately modified 993tt to a pair of 700HP 997tt's. Referring to the 993tt, he concludes "Among these exceptional Turbos, it's the one I'm still longing for." Better update that appraisal!

Not only that but it did a lap time of 2:04 and the 997TTs did 2:03 and 2:06. Not bad for giving up 250hp.

Car started out as a C4S, like mine. I'm trying to upload a video of my car running so y'all can hear the exhaust but I RL won't upload for me. ANy help would be appreciated. My car is a Stage II Protomotive engine with supposedly 510 HP. I have not had it on a dyno yet, but will soon

Duh oh! I got it done by Bruce Farrow when I bought the car. You need it for 19A replacement value coverage.

Sinfulsteve,

What's the exhaust system you have? It's one of the best I've heard. Been looking for years to find one that doesn't have that crappy Chris Craft sound.

Thanks

Ronnie,

Thanks for posting this info.

Would you be able to post a scan of that article to know more about the cars in question? Seems hard to believe, unless the 993 has substantially more mods than the other 2..

Boostid,

Mine is a Protomotive system. Came with the Stage 2 conversion. I'm unsure if Protomotive offers only exhaust, but I bet they do. Tod Knighton is great to work with. And it's still running cats. You should hear it when I've opened it up. It screams.

PM for more.

He liked the 993 better for qualities other than speed. The 993 had Hoosiers vs the others which had typical DOT R-compounds so it ended up between them in terms of track times.

Could it be that horsepower quoted for the 997TT was a little optimistic???

What has your experience been against the moded 997TT on the track?

Ciao Levino

993TT with PSS9 with turbos, and ECU (no cams) is about 1 second slower than stock 997TT in sport mode on a moderately fast 5km long track. With 700bhp, a 997T should be 5 seconds faster at least IMO.

I can confirm this (stock 997) comparison. On both the long uphill and long downhill straights at Mt Panorama, the stock 997 that I laped behind was just marginally able to pull away and indeed ultimatelyy lapped 1.5s faster than me on an 7+km circuit. I had always guessed my car produces about 470HP - maybe 350KW vs 353kW for the 997. I had wondered about the aero drag, as I could gain ever so slightly in 3rd, hold him in 4th and he would pull marginally away in 5th and 6th.

Salut Jean;

the story on the two 997TT's is on the Excellence web site. Unfortunately the story on the 993 Turbo is a separate article and not posted.

You can however see the 5 comparison times and speeds for the three vehicles on the VIR on the web article, if you click on the map on the left hand side.

Enjoy
