The Porsche Exchange is a total rip-off. Their North Shore customer base has too much money.

Take it to Sol up at Perfect Power or Fisher if you don't want to DIY. If you DIY though, I would recommend not removing the oil line if you don't have to. The threads in the case are pretty soft and make for a very easy cross threading incident, which leaves you sort of screwed with no oil in the car. Yeah, ask me how

If you enjoy spending a couple hours with the car and learning/seeing how everything goes together then I highly recommend the DIY. If it will frustrate you and you think you might benefit from a professional set of eyes on the car anyhow, then the $220 is money well spent.

And yes, the Exchange is, um, a little heavy handed on price. But nice folks when I've dealt with them.

i got the oil change today. when i made the appt. i was told an oil change was 249$ but since i was a regular customer and bought my car at the dealer i would be charged 220$. when time to pay came i was handed a bill for 341$....not surprising given the treatment i have received at the exchange before. after i mentioned the 220$, they eventually knocked the bill back down. here is how they broke it down:

labor: 175$ (159$ per hour is their rate)
oil filter 1: 35$
oil filter 2: 33$
oil (mobil 1): 70$
misc: 27$

they told me they prefer to use 0w40 given i drive the car in the cold and it will start and run a little easier with that viscosity.

They put OW40 in her so you come back in the early summer for another $341 oil change to get the proper 15W50 oil.

Don't go to the Exchange any more. You need to find an indy shop you trust.

The misc $27 charge is for 1 O-ring, and four crush washers -- wow, maybe $6 in real cost. I wouldnt use that place again.

Seriously. Don't take your 993TT to a dealer - ever. There's really no point, especially when you have two well-recommended independent shops nearby.

I'd also guess that "they prefer to use 0w40" is because that is the only oil used in the water cooled cars and they probably don't even stock 15w-50

Most auto parts stores will take the old oil for no charge in a clean & sealed container.

If it's anything like the NA cars then $220 isn't bad. I refuse to do oil changes on my car. I pay my local wrench $75 bucks and I provide the oil and filters. I enjoy my coffee and chit chat with him while watching him work...get to check things out while the car is up in the air.

I would definetly do it if I had a lift, but just not worth it laying on your back. My MBZs I do change in 10 mins with one hand while holding a cold beer in the other.
