Short Shift Tranny Cover Dimple

Short Shift Tranny Cover Dimple
After last weeks thread about short shifters and tranny cover mods, I thought I'd take pictures while Andi's cover was modified by Mike Schatz.
(Amir had installed the short shift before I bought the car, but never had the tunnel put back on. Mike still had the tunnel and we did the deed today.)
Excuse the crappy cell pics.
1. Carefully draw a outline on the tunnel using a bottle of champagne in the correct spot. (We elected to drink the champagne first, but you may choose the reverse order.)
2. Heat the metal along the stiffening rib.
3. Whack with a big hammer to flatten out the rib.
4. Screw the cover onto some 2x4's as a support jig.
5. Heat and whack until you have the right shape and depth. The fat round part is around an inch deep, and it tapers to nothing at the "cork" end.
When you are done, drill a hole in the lowest part of the depression to allow water to drain out. Then sand and paint. This took about 2 hours.

A few more tips:
When you test fit the cover, cover the dimple in chalk. If it is rubbing, the chalk will show you where the issue is.
After the last heat cycle, quench the metal with cold water.

Just a tip that I "think" is true: FD Motorsports have modified some of the parts in the SSK so the dimple can be quite a bit smaller than the standard RS SSK installation. Someday, I'm gonna look into that! I'd give them a jingle before doing this.
