Default My RS Tuning details

I finally got a chance to have Gerhard from RS Tuning to translate the invoices for the work done on my car and here is the summary.

Engine built in December 19, 1997 @ 15,804 Km

Mechanical 964 lifters
Lifters adjust every 10,000 km
Intake clearance 0.12 mm
Exhaust clearance 0.14 mm
Spark plugs replace every 20,000 Km

Second fuel pump

Connecting rods from 993 GT2 race motor 993 103 020 60

Secondary oil cooler under front bumper

Clutch 1000 – 1900 Nm

Intercooler Race 993 GT2

Throttle housing Race 993 GT2

Turbochargers modified K24’s

Higher compression ratio pistons with pockets for valve clearance

New camshafts, no details provided

Sport catalytic and mufflers

Rear axle parts in aluminum from Race 993 GT2

Transmission oil cooler

Custom programmed ECU for 531 PS @ 5,260 rpm and 804 Nm @ 4,550 rpm

The suspension is adjustable monoball with PSS9's

Maybe a little overkill for 524 SAE HP, or maybe not.

That is a very nice mod list you have right there! Can I have the modified GT2 throttle housing and Intercooler?

LAT, many thanks for sharing the details

This engine is a fully specced RS engine of the era using all the latest parts and tricks they had gained from the GT2 racing.

The K24 turbo had just come out and these were the first RS hybrid having smaller compressor wheels than the later K24/26RS version (which was used in the Secan 640PS racers) the advantge of LATs is the massive low end torque with the disadvantage being power dropping off over 6K rpm (compared to the 24/26 version)

The rods mentioned are the ones in the ad below and were used in the early GT2 racers until Carrillos took over - Interestingly my 993tt actually had these rods from new (according to RS it was because it was a very early build car) but even more interesting was that they bent after a few miles of 760NM !!

RS initially were dismissive of Carillos but ended up using them and now use them in everything...

The gearbox oil cooler is another sign of a serious build, these usually only went on 600PS+ cars or serious track machines.

A note on the intercooler/throttle body. This intercooler is the original race version which was good for factory ~520hp and Porsche were forced to develope the Secan to further than this power level. I once got hold of one of these I/Cs and asked RS if they could build me a more powerful motor around it but was told that in reality the stock 993tt intercooler was "as good" and there was no advantage with the max power available from either I/C being around the 560hp level....

I am interested in the "higher compression pistons" , I have no knowledge of them using different pistons apart from a 3.8 build ?

Ouch!!! The motor has about 28,000 miles since it was built.
When you say bent, how bent, since my Leakdown numbers were good, less than 5% and the motor runs strong.

The engine still ran OK, the bent rods were discovered during a strip down for something else. Is yours twin plug ? I think the twin plug allows some big overboost at peak torque, I used to see ~1.5bar sometimes which was probably allowing mid 800s NM for very brief periods - I think this is what did the damage.....

Were they bent or stretched? The reason I ask is that my CTR-2 teardown had stretched rods when it was in its 520 PS version and it was still pulling full power. We replaced them with Pankl Ti rods for the 582 PS motor.
My RS motor is a single plug.

They were bent, visibly.... The twin plug is probably the culprit, on the dyno data sheet I had the DIN peak torque of 757NM was achieved at 1.3bar, like I said a good prod on the throttle at 4000rpm would see 1.5bar for a second or two, this is some silly torque....

Great spec LAT, awesome torque you have there

Have you had any opportunity to run 60 - 130 numbers, etc yet?

Thanks for the positive remarks, its such a smooth power delivery that if you don't watch the speedo it can get away on you. This is not a good thing in Canada where the speed enforcement police have the ultimate authority to impound your car and the like. Good to have the USA only 35 miles to the South.

I went out once with the XA-22 and recorded using 95 Octane blend

100-200 kph in 4th gear at 7.5
60-120 mph in 4th in 7.2

Will be doing more next summer South of the border where I get to keep my car if busted.

LAT,

Good to have the data, at least you are set now.

A couple of comments, I was positive that your car had higher than stock compression given the torque numbers at that boost, if they confirmed using higher compression pistons, my opinion is that they have used custom Woessner pistons, which is the usual choice for German race engine builders who require customized setups.

As to the rods that TB mentions, these were the stock rods but shot peened, which makes them somewhat stronger without increasing weight.
