Default PSS-9 Settings

I'd be interested in people's thoughts as to the their preferred settings for street and for track.

I've read of views that suggest that the incremental adjustment 1-9 is really not linear, with some meaningful change between 1-2, and 2-3, but little from 3-7, before achieving change again from 7-8 and 8-9, effectively giving you about 5 meaningful settings. I must say too, that when adjusting without jacking the car up, it's pretty hard to "feel" the clicks - so I find myself going for either all hard for spirited driving and all soft for daily street use. I know I would find it hard to "daily drive" on the hardest setting on our streets - I'd need that old kidney belt from the enduro bike days.

I'm expecting that some will like the front softer, other's the rear. It will be interesting to hear your views and the reasons behind the choices.

Thanks.

I have mine 5 front 6 rear. Mine is a PSS-10. Most will want the front softer.

I have pss10s set at 3 front and 5 rear, and that feels like a very good street set-up -- certainly not too stiff, but plenty of control.

On the PSS9, 1 is the firmest and 9 is the softest.

On the PSS10, I've heard that 10 the firmest and 1 the softest. Can you confirm.

Really? I have the PSS10 and assumed that 10 is the softest.

My PSS-9's were setup at 5's all around and I find it to soft. Even on NYC streets.

Look at previous posts of jimhsu and goatfarmer1970.

Instead of assuming, what did the literature/manual that came with your PSS10 say?

here's a graph and a closeup of the adjustment **** from Bilstein's brochure: see attachments.

The arrows and the word placements on that **** is a little misleading but looks to me that 1 is softer and 10 is firmer.

Haven't had your coffee yet?

I went out and adjusted my suspension to a softer setting. I have not driven it yet to see how it feels.

RUF installed my suspension and didn't provide the manual. Surprisingly, Bilstein does not have any manuals on-line.

My primary source of recommendations for settings was here. But the recommendations came from PSS9 users, and now I know they are different.

Sure am glad I read the string!

On our recent 1000 mile drive on Porsche Palooza, I sure thought my car handled well. Very planted and crisp. But rough on the freeway expansion joints. I guess it is because I was set on 7 rear and 8 front. Pretty firm.

Now I set it to 2 rear and 3 front. Techs tell me to set the rear one notch softer than the front. This will be for city driving. I can count the clicks to firm it up for more agressive roads. I will fool around with the settings.

Thanks for posting this. Very interesting. But my adjustment ***** look nothing like the one in the picture.

The **** on the front shocks has a similar "soft and firm" with arrows. Rear **** does not.

I have f 25mm and r 22mm 5 way adjustable sway bars and have my pss9's re-valved to f 650lbs and r 1000lb springs. Those little dials on the suspension do very little in relation to adjusting the sways.

I went over to RUF today and the head tech told me to set it at 6 front and 4 rear. Perfect. It has made my car ride very nicely on city roads.

I can easily adjust it without jacking the car.

Patrick, so did they tell you whether 1 is soft and 10 is firm on PSS-10, or vice versa?

Or did they tell you to have the front firmer than rear, or vice versa?

The **** markings on Bilstein brochure: if you believe the arrow direction, then turning toward 10 is going softer. If you believe the placement of the words "SOFT" and "HARD" then 10 is hard. Confusing.

The graph: I interpret it to mean that for the same velocity of length change (m/s), it takes more force at stage 10 than stage 1 for the shock to compress (i.e. 10 is firmer), and the stage 10 rebound force is also much higher than stage 1. So the RUF head tech is telling you to have the front firmer than the rear.

I found a few threads and posts on RL that say PSS-9 settings are firmer at 1 and softer at 9, but, in what seems like a great attempt to confuse the automotive enthusiast community, PSS-10 settings are firmer at 10 and softer at 1.

My interpretation of the graph from Bilstein would be consistent with that. Also my understanding is that a softer front and firmer rear will help avoid understeer.

Jim. On the pss10 #1 is softest and #10 is hardest.

I have been told to put the rear softer than the front. Don't remember the reason for that.

I will say that it is much better for street driving. And I am at a similar ride height. RS + 5mm.
