Back from the dead....and what a resurrection!
I got my baby back this week. Please indulge me a little as I show her off.
As some will recall, I set about doing the UMW Stage 2 upgrade, after a year of vacillating over the many options, the stock Vs mod issue, as well as the cost (my pockets are far from deep) etc. The joy was cut short when, during the upgrade, we discovered that the thrust bearing had failed (see earlier thread - "Thrust Bearing Failure"). THe engine had 54K kilometers or 34 K miles.
So after months and months without the car, as various parts were sourced from around the globe, I now have the car with its rebuilt engine complete with it's Stage 2 bolt on's. Many thanks to Kevin at UMW for his patience in waiting so long to getting his "cores" back, and for the countless e-mails and the occasional protracted out of hours call. He was also very helpfull in sourcing an essentially new 996 crankshaft at very reasonable cost (my only option here in AUS was a new unit at A$10K!) Also I must thank my local techs who did all the work and who worked in well with Kevin's explicit instructions. Their expertise was gratefully received (T & D Automotive, Brisbane, AU).
The "WYIT" (while you're in there) led to the topend being rebuilt (guides and exhaust valves, resurfacing and ceramic coasting). New rings, and the essentially new OEM 996 rods and crankshaft, new main bearings, all new seals throughout, new intermediate shaft bearings, timing chain and sprocket, as well as all new sensors (knock, N75, Cylinder Head Temp, IAT, 5Bar Fuel Pressure Regulator, Forge BOV with Yellow springs, plugs and wires, Orange tip IC Hoses/Breeze clamps, fan and alternator bearings - that's it, I think
As for the UMW Stage 2, I added ceramic coating to the turbos, and did the heat exchanger porting, added the 100Cell Cats, the Check Valve Oil lines as well as the Sachs Motorsport Clutch Kit.
To top it off, Simon (Boost Crazy) kindly sold me his Champion RGSB 19" forged alloys, and Grant (Hiflexaust) his GT3 seats. The outside remains OEM aside from the wheels. She is lowered and riding on PSS-9s.
Currently, I am following Kevin's instructions for the turbo run-in (200 mile with slow and steady boost runs all less than 5Bar - next weekend should see this task completed. All I can say at this stage is that she is running smooth, the boost comes on low in the RPM range and is very smooth and linear. Given the constraints on higher boost at this stage, I'd say the car feels like a NA vehicle in terms of the sense of thrust. It may well be a different story when all is bedded in....
Finally, I'd mention the Sachs Motorsport Clutch and LWFW. I've read much about this, with most on this forum with the modification being praiseworthy. I was warned by one or two (including my tech), but Kevin convinced me otherwise. Well, my experience is that the change is seamless. Same feel, same bite, no issues with greater vulnerablility to stalling on hills and most surprising, no reall noticable change in noise.
I'll update things as my experience with this continues. As of this morning after a wonderful 100km drive through one of my local National Park's over the Great Dividing Range, its all smiles

Thanks everyone for your kind comments.
Sfbanchs - what do you suggest? The exhaust S/S tips from Gert are 450Euro (ouch!) I see Fabspeed have some for US$300.
I should complete the ZC turbo run in period next weekend and then should be able to report on the WOT status.
What sort of "run in" do you think the engine itself requires given that it is really just rings and bearings?
