Default "Air duct" replacement

Noticed this today when I had the intercooler off to replace the K&N air filter that the previous owner installed:

Can anyone tell me what this piece does and if 993-106-403-00-M100 is the correct part # for a '97 993 Turbo. Also any guides to removing/replacing this part?

Thanks in advance...

Very common failure on the 993. About $45 and not too long to replace.

I don't know for certain, but my guess would be a combo of age/dryrot. The intercooler seems bolted in too well to flex under driving or boost so I don't think that would have caused it.
