Default Very difficult start ups...opinion

Hey guys,

The ticker is at 59580.. ready for 60k service. 80 miles ago I started to have difficult cold start ups (irratic idle until engine was warm). Once car was driven and warmed all was well. Today I again had the irratic cold start up, but after a stop over I had a very difficult time with a warm start up. The motor would turn but not fire (yes it finally fired after three key cycles). Very uncharacteristic of my baby who usually starts with no problem. Are these signs of a needed 60K service?? I don't drive her too often.. every other weekend. I was hoping to hold off on a $1200 service. Has anyone experienced these signs before a needed service? Thanks for any input--Aaron.

I think sfbanchs means the DME relay - it's in the fuse box under the front lid. Have a look at http://p-car.com/diy/relay/

But generally the relay won't cause rough running; it tends to either run fine or not start/run at all.

ok guys,

I replaced the DME and its a no go! Turned it over and fired but extremely low low rpm idle, almost to the point of a stall. I bumped up the rpm with the pedal let off and the motor rpm reved up and down for a few moments before it sputtered back down. Any ideas??

Have you checked your boost hoses to see if one of them popped off the turbo or the IC?

This has nothing to do with 60k service. These cars don't self-destruct when they come within 500mi. of a factory-recommended service.

I was having intermittent hard start up problems with my 993tt. Mostly it wouldn't restart at times until several tries but wasn't consistent. I tried the DME relay replacement which is a good place to start and costs under $30 which didn't cure it. I ended up replacing the fuel pump during the 90,000 mi. service which cured the problem. The Bosch fuel pump costs under $300. Diagnosis took a while since it was intermittent and labor was another $200 or so. There are several circuits in the electronics on the car that will cut off power to the fuel pump (anti-theft system, DME) if certain conditions aren't met which can make it harder to diagnose that you would expect.
