Default Heat shield replacement and RSR muffler upgrade -- some photos

Hi all,

This past weekend I replaced the heats shields and some other miscellaneous hardware at the back end of my rust bucket 993 Turbo. At the same time I did an upgrade to RSR mufflers from Carnewal. Since Gert lives less than an hour from my place, it was fairly easy to drive over to him to pick up two nicely built RSR mufflers.

The end result is actually pretty neat, albeit not entirely as expected. At idle the car has more aggresive growl. However inside the car you are pretty much isolated from exhaust noise, making the difference, especially when driving, not very noticeable. I suppose I will have to ask my wife to take the car for a spin. I can then check how the RSR mufflers sound as she drives by.

Anyway, here are some photos of the work:

I do not have a professional garage, so it may all look a bit backyard mechanic stuff. ;-) Still the end result is a success and I am a happy man.

Best regards,

Rik, great site and pics. I always wondered what heat shields looked like!
What are the other cars in your avatar? Yours?

good work/pics.
I just went out to my car because I didn't remember seeing the heat shield on my turbo - it is there but seems to be rotated 90 degrees towards the engine side (on both sides) so that the lower outside stud closest to the muffler is free/shield doesn't reach this stud - so that there isn't much shielding between the turbo and muffler. Do I have mine on incorrectly - evidence of previous work on my 'stock' engine/turbos?

Is all this heat shielding really necessary? What are you protecting with the heat shielding, the bumper cover? It seems as if those turbo heat shields would be more like heat traps...

Here is a snapshot from PET.

This is for the LH side turbo. The RH side is more or less a mirror image of the LH side, although the shield is bit different in shape.

I believe the main purpose for the heat shields to be a protection for the plastic rear bumper.

I would think they keep some heat off the lower (plastic) valve covers as well.
