Default anyone seen/has this console in a 993TT?

Never seen anything like this before. It's on a 993TT for sale. Just wondering if anyone has this, whether it's a factory option (the leather stitching around the edges that extend down toward the Ebrakes looks factory and the phone does say Porsche), or if it's some aftermarket addon. I am thinking it has potential for other addons like an iPod dock.

It was a factory option. Serach and you'll find pictures of this optional phone console in other 993s, as well as 964s and 911s.

yes - this was a $3000+ factory option. The fone is a now useless analog type. I'm getting ready to remove the phone and add some other goodies. Try searching on "batphone" as it is oft referred to.

They might look good, but whats the point of having gauges down there when you can't see them while driving.. I know it looks "cool", but I think its far from functional. My $0.02..

You can glance at them like you would any of the dash gauges. Or do you drive with you eyes staring at the tach and speedo ?

Depends................................
Sometimes I don't even have time to look at the tach!
I have a boost gauge down by my left knee. It is functionally useless.

Well.. Lets be honest.. Glancing toward the dash which is almost in your peripheral vision is one thing, but bending your head downward to look at the area where the ashtray is requires a bit more than a glance.

If you are on a road course or travelling at high speed which is mostly when you need to check your gauges to make sure everything is operating as it should, its quite dangerous to neck your head down to see what the guage is reading. And if you are in 1st or 2nd gear, you can barely blink before the tach hits redline so, i dont think you'll have enough time to take in what those low-mounted gauges are reading.

I know most people put them there for looks, and that is a different story.. But, I just dont see very much functionality from them in that position.

I drive staring at the horizon out the windshield.. I look only at the tach and/or speedo when I need to.

Just my $0.02 worth...

When I drive 993's with this option, I find my right leg quite crowded and difficult to get to the brake quickly -- certainly a distraction for me.

Seems like a really good idea, how much would it cost to tear it our and put in the normal one? Would it leave witness marks????

I'm 6'3" and had that console in my car when I bought it in 2003. My right leg had almost no room to move between the wheel and the console. I had it taken out and sold it. I think it would make for a great audio/DVD system though.

when you took it out did you find a standard small standard console with two rows of buttons to fit in the void?

That is what I put in. A factory leather stock console.

Yes, I put in the standard leather stock console. You will also need to purchase an ashtray. There will be a small indentation in the lower dash from where the original console was positioned. It is not very noticeable. There are also 2 small screws that are in the lower dash that will be visible once the wider console is removed.
