Default K 24 upgrade

Installed a pair of factory K24 turbos and the results are very impressive. I used the FVD ECU. .5 bar fuel regulator and new K 24 factory 993 TT turbos. Picked up the car and after proper seating/run in gave it the juice. It absolutely blows away the standard K16, even with the FVD ecu upgrade. It's a little laggy below 3,500 but hold on afterward. Despite the later powerband, I find the car still very easy to drive and reasonably torquey. Seems to be a good balanced kit from FVD. Where do you go from here? So many discussions on hybrids, I decided to go for a factory like GT2 setup but with improved ECU mapping. It works. What could improve this set up from here? Bypasses, 100 cell cats, etc....

Pat,
the performance bug has truly bit you!
very cool, K-24's rock compared to K-16's.
let's go for a ride this summer and try out the top of those K-24's.

I think a large aux oil cooler is your next mod. After that, I think the 100 cell race cats (large diameter).. If MN has lax smog laws, perhaps a cat bypass instead. Have you "ported" your exhaust headers? After that... put the car on a diet.

MN really doesn't have any smog check, so fortunately you can modify at will. I worry more about the CE light. Since we have reasonably cool summers here, I was wondering if an oil cooler was absolutely necessary. If so, should it be the "S" cooler or GT?

Unless you're doing hot weather high speed driving or track work I don't think you need another oil cooler. Unless you're using your new-found 50-80 bhp on a regular basis the car won't run appreciably hotter.

I bought the pair for under $4,000. Try turbodriven.com for your closest borg warner dealer in these turbos. They are KKK (K24) but that company was bought by borg warner, so the box may come labeled that way. Check the part numbers to be certain they are the GT2 K24's for the 993TT. Their are tags on the turbos to further verify that number.

Pardon my ignorance, but are the 993tt OEM turbos K-16s?

Thanks.

Yes. The OEM turbos for the 993tt were K16's unless you have the european 993TT "S" which like the GT2, had K24's.

Wonderful things, the K24's. I really enjoyed mine and they work EXCELLENT in combination with a pair of muffler bypasses. You really make the K24 live up to what they where meant for.

My buddy is getting rid of a pair as he says he doesn't like the "lag" and he's going for some 16/24's. So if anyone is interested they are from P dealership and have about 2k on them. Let me know. I don't know what he wants for them, but if there is any interest I'll find out.

I have heard that the type of ecu program mated with the K24's has a significant effect on the lag nature of the turbos. The FVD program simply works well. While they are more lagging than the K16's, I really don't feel it much when I drive the car. Maybe 350/500 rpm difference in powerband, but hold on afterwards.

The K24 program that comes with the factory cars have a little bit more lag than aftermarket. Also there are two small negative bumps in the HP band in the factory program.

Default k24's

I upgraded my 933tt with the K24's as well. At the time of the upgrade I had a front mounted oil cooler, greedy boost conroller, and 2nd ECU especially programmed for the setup. I use original ECU to pass smog.

One thing I didnt do was upgrade the intercooler. Found that with running 1bar of boost I was getting the knock sensor going off. Figured this was due to bad Ca gas and the fact that the stock intercooler wasnt enough. I changed the intercooler out to the Andial modded, and everything works fine.

I find that this setup has about the same lag as the original turbos. The main difference is that this car screams. Dont waste your money on 100cel cats unless your cats die. For the money/hp they are a waste. Get some cat bypasses. I guess with the bypasses people report full boost with the k24's @ 2500 rpm!

At minimum you need a front mounted oil cooler and an upgraded intercooler.
For performance I would get a boost controller (unless your already set for 1bar). I have been running mine @ 1bar on Ca gas for years now with no problems.

He has a program for the 24's...I wonder what his issue is. He does say when it comes on boost the whole car wants to go sideways....probably b/c its two wheel drive....he's going to take mine w/16/24's and Kevin's stage 1 for a squirt and see how he likes it.
