How useful are those cheapy OBD 2 code gadgets? Can they clear a CEL?

Most can read and reset the CEL...

which one do you guys recommend for a little more detailed analysis than what the hammer offers?

I have a simple OBD-2 reader, but I think if I was buying a new one I'd check out the Durametric software. It looks like a pretty nice package.

I haven't tried it and have no affiliation other than thinking it looks cool.

I have the $99 reader from Kragen. It can read the CEL codes and clear the light.
