My brother and I are heading to Houston to look at a 964 3.6 and 993 turbo he is thinking of purchasing. Besides most of the obvious why a 993 over the 3.6 or is it just preference. I keep telling him the 993 is the better choice. Am i wrong? Assuming the cars are in the same shape. Any comments. The 964 he is looking at is signal green and the two 993s are yellow and one is black.

I've had both, however my 964 Turbo was the 3.3 model. The 993 Turbo is better in everyway that you can imagine. If you search back in time, you'll find some comparison posts I made between the two cars. I sold the 964 Turbo after 2yrs, I've had the 993 Turbo for 3yrs now and don't see myself ever selling the car.

1994 Turbo 3.6 will be 13 years.
1996/1997 993tt will be 10/11 years.
Turbo 3.6, single turbo RWD.
993tt, twin-turbo AWD.
Interiors will be similar.
Suspensions will be similar.
Turbo 3.6 is the final evolution of the RWD air-cooled turbo, however with an exterior that is similar to 911s from 1965. Some may say the last evolution of the 930 shape.
993tt is the final evolution of the air-cooled turbo with an exterior that speaks for itself.
If the descision is based on which turbo is the best, then you'll have a very hard time deciding because there are many supporters of each. Each owner has the "best" turbo. Their's.
If the decision is based on whether or not if you want the last evolution of the air-cooled turbo, then 993tt.
If the decision is based on whether or not if you want the "ultimate" 930, then Turbo 3.6.
Finally, I doubt you'll be unhappy with either, but I would lean towards the yellow 993tt.

When I decided to buy a sports car/exotic a few years back I test drove the 930/964/993/996 all turbos. I also test drove a viper a vette and an sl55. They were all pretty much in the same price range with the exception of the 930.

In the end I choose the 993TT because it gave me the most "pride of ownership". You see vettes, benzes, and vipers on the street frequently, and when it comes to the Porsches, the 996TT was fast but didnt give me any goosebumps, the 930 was scary it felt like i was going to crash, and the 964 was in my opinion too expensive for what you got. The 993TT on the other hand was fast and raw like the viper, exotic looking, and gives one a unique and unending sense of satisfaction when you drive it, when you park it and look back at it, and when you never (ok maybe once in a blue moon) see another llike yours on the street. You also get a satisfaction knowing that you are as fast as anything on the street. the 964 3.6 is god awful beautiful but you are going to feel weird just having spent 80K for a car with the same interior as a 1977 turbo. Driving them you can really really get after it with the 993TT and have the self delusion that you are in total control.

Drive them both, the power delivery is much different, so see which one he likes better. LIke was mentioned above, they are very different cars in. The only thing I disagree with above is the comment about the $80 grand car with a 1977 interior. The 964 interior is almost identical to the 993 one.

The 3.6 is almost on the collector end of spectrum. I would think the 993 would be a better driver... But you should definitely drive both as it will be a matter of personal opinion.

I like 'em both, so I put a 993TT engine in my 964. Now that's a supercar...

Thanks, melmanc. There are a couple Rennlisters in the area, we should get together and have lunch at Rudy's or something....

I want to note one major disagreement with some above posts. The 993 series primary innovation from a driving standpoint was a massively revised suspension. I don't know the technical details, but there is a significant advance in both ride quality and lift off oversteer in the 993s.
You can't go wrong with either, choice obviously, but the multilink suspension advances in the 96/97TTs can't be discounted.

I can't comment on a 993 but I would like to make a point about the 3.6 964turbo (965). If you're worried about the price then look at a 3.3. They are not that different to justify such a big price gap, and a 3.3 can have a few sensible mods to make it just as fast/sorted - although frankly all of these cars are lunatic-fast for the street!

Nice choice to be making :-)
