Magnus,

It is just a matter of avoiding overreving while shifting. If you keep your foot planted and miss the shift for any reason or do a slow shift you would kill instantly your engine. It is just a 10% liftoff or so while shifting, unnoticeable to performance almost, unless you are a pro-racer.

Downshifting has ALWAYS to be made using the clutch unless you are an expert in matching revs to less than 100RPMs.

Need to get that cutoff switch sorted however...

So a race start it's just keeping the right rev and force the gear in?

Magnus, the start is like any other car with the clutch, you put first, keep the clutch in and then release on green.
