New ECU experience?
Does anybody have any experience with chipping a 993 Turbo? I hear that it is supposed to produce a great gain in horsepower but is it safe?

sicaone,
The key to tuning these cars is a re-programmed ECU. But beware, there are very few companies that can successfully do this.
Depending upon the specification you choose from 430bhp through to 630bhp(and beyond!) each upgrade whether you have replaced exhaust/cams/turbos etc. will require an ECU re-map.

I don't have actual experience, but I have done a fair amount of research into this. I just purchased my '97tt (bone stock engine), and during my search I found that a bone stock 993tt can be upgraded to the same hp as a 993 Turbo S - the ECU (DME) has to be remapped (if you have a '96, it's a "bigger" deal to do than a '97) and some recommend adding an additional oil cooler behind the front spoiler. The cost varies depending on who supplies the upgrade. Make sure you check out your supplier. Get references and be careful. I've heard you will want to make sure your remap takes into consideration the available fuel in your area. The east coast has higher octane at the pump than the west coast. Just make sure you get what you want/need.
I've heard that this is a very popular upgrade because there is no other modification needed (e.g. bigger turbos/intercoolers, etc.). I have also heard drivers can really feel the difference.
Good luck. Let me (the board) know what you decide and how you like it.

Dan

There are several outfits that are doing this successfully.
Try www.imagineauto.com / 913-780-1617
Kits for both 993TT & 996TT can be had. Big power & can be done safely for around $3K or so.

Call Mike Schatz of www.schatzmotorsport.com at (805) 482-7278. Mike is the West Coast distributor for FVD of Germany. They offer several different levels of completely remapped ECU's. I've taken on several different aftermarket upgrades (ECU, turbos, intercooler, etc). If you just want to dip your toes into the upgrade waters, do the FVD ECU. It will definitely rock your world from the performance standpoint. Tremendous bang for the buck as well! Good luck.

I just upgraded my ECU to the Turbo S one. Overall, I feel a bit better response and torque, but I can't scientifically prove it.
I would recommned that you check out this web site: 993 TT Mods to start out with. There is a lot of great advice there.
I recommend that you don't get too greedy with HP. That's not everything and you may sacrific drivability to achieve this. However, if you are concerned about running the 1/4 mile under 10 seconds, that's a different story.
I would also recommend that you talk to Steve Weiner at rennsport systems He is a great guy and very knowledgable.
The 96 DME's were not chippable, since the chips were soldered in. 97's are. The cost for a new DME is about $1500, with programming for about $2500. They have come up on eBay once in a while for significantly less.
Another route would be to get a Motor Kit from a place like here. For 5K, you get a preprogramed DME, Aux Oil Cooler ( which is already $800 ), and the Turbo S twin exhaust tips.

Jeff,
If you are not feeling a big difference with that new ECU, return it and get a FVD one. Or, have Steve reprogram yours.
Something is very wrong.
