Question UK Turbo Owners

First, many thanks for the knowledge to be found on Rennlist as posted by real experts the world over... I have already scared the wits out of dodgy people selling 993 Turbo's in the Uk for inflated prices by using some of the hints and tips I found here.

Anyway, enough obsequiousness. Rennlist seems to be mainly US which is great but I am jealous of the many excellent tuning options (as mentioned by the p-car.com folks, and so many others). Are there any reliable, high quality outfits doing the same thing here in the UK? Do I have to go to the continent? I don't mean the really big types like Gemballa but the enthusiasts who have tinkered, tuned and discovered the best way forward for niche systems like mufflers, intercoolers etc.

If any Uk-based owners have tips on great servicing outlets also I would really be grateful to know of them. Basically I am trying to find out who in the UK is respected by you lot and who is not.

Thanks again for all your help already and thanks for the bandwidth. W

Hi WillBank,

Welcome to the board. I recently bought a 993 Turbo and am by no means an expert. I am also desperately looking for a decent place to service my car around London - see the 'JAZ Porsche' post in the 993 forum. It is a scary prospect. I am currently seriously thinking of a trip down to Werke 1 (factory - search 993 forum with the term werk) because I would like to maintain a dealer history but it would be ideal to have a trusted garage closer by for actually doing any work that needs doing - ie everything apart from standard service.

Looks like you need a trip to Tech 9 based near Liverpool. I have my car looked after by them and they know 993tts inside out. They will supply and fit upgrades which are basically developed by RS Tuning (best in Geramny). They will give you anything up to 520hp/680NM which is gained by fitting special RST turbos, cams, silencers and sport cats and of cours the all important RS Tuning dyno developed software. This conversion is similar to what I have on my car, main differences being special GT2 EVO head sealing, twin plug, fine tune programming on the bench dyno.

TB993tt, I snared you into the discussion! I kinda figured from your other posts that you knew your stuff but I didn't want to bother you personally. Cheers for the help... I will call Phil when I have closed on my car.

Thanks also Mags... I will certainly post if I find any good London area people. Meantime I'll search for 'Werk'.

More the merrier...

Hi there - this has been discussed on the 964 board. If you live anywhere near london the place to go to is www.jzmachtech.com - speak to Jonas or Steve. They carry out a lot of engine rebuilds, carry the Roock range of performance enhancements and do some very good chips (apparently - I haven't doen this on my car). Their level of service is second to non - labour at £37 per hour and no bull&%%t!!

I have used them twice and really like them - so much so I drive all the way round the M25 to get to them.

The choice is yours - good luck!

Thanks for all of your help. I am using Tech9 for a check-up while the car is in the north and I reckon that JAZ will get the rest of my work.

Do you know of/can you recommend any good franchise dealers in the London area?

I can highly recommend the sales side of Rivervale Porsche inBrighton (sort of Londonish if you live in the southern section). I have not had any direct servicing done there as yet but I just bought a perfect condition 23k TT from them and their customer service, & work done on the car prior to sale, seems excellent.

Just the usual $0.02.

Congrats WillBank! What colour? Hope to see you at the next Rennlisters meet when someone more organised than myself gets round to organising it...

Gee Maggs it's people like you with your warm welcomes that make the world a better place (cut to shots of sunlight, flowers, small puppies - all to keep the wives etc happy - and 993's wailing with RSR mufflers for the rest of us).

Colour: black metallic (look like BMW's anthracite grey but don't yet know the proper Porsche name for it). Factory uprated to 430 Bhp and 23k miles.

Appropriately enough it is set to be delivered on my birthday which is this Saturday if the bankers can get their wire transfers to work properly.

I would love to join the next Rennlisters' meeting... It would be good to put faces to avatars.

(I'm so excited I feel like 993 RS facing the paint-shop doors... But don't worry I'll keep it to myself )

Thanks again

Excellent choice (mine is metallic black too - think it's called 'Basalt'?) but not as much HP. I looked into uprating to 450hp at the factory and it was very expensive - like cheaper to buy another track car... so it sounds like a good investment too (if you can ever call a car an investment..).

Willbank, congratulations on the car - especially the 430hp upgrade, get some pics on the board, i'm interested in the 450hp upgrade at Gert but not convinced on the price per hp.. Judging by other reports the power is delivered more at higher revs..

IMHO the 430 is obvious in the speed the car gets across the rev range... needle really flies across and the whole experience is even more immediate. It is deinately a 'nice to have' but I would go to 430 from 408 and just fit the 'S' intercooler at the front rather than going the whole 450 and having to upgrade the turbos...

Having said that without doing the turbos 430 is about the max you'll get and so if you reckon that in the future you are going to want to upgrade even beyond 450 then you'll need the new turbos anyway and so you might as well do them now (and not waste the money going to 430 first which will then be redundant).

It is, however, an exremely awesome drive at 430 and I am more than happy right now!
