Talking New Intercooler

Well. it has been a couple of weeks since my last upgrade, so just installed a new intercooler from Protomotive (to go with the re-programmed ECU). You can't get much bigger than this thing. It did require some notching of the rear spoiler on the inside for fit. Also, you can no longer run the angled vanes under the top surface. I installed a black mess screen which looks good, blocks view to the rest of the engine compartment, and gives full air to the intercooler. The nice thing, I don't feel any turbo lag, and the car feels REALLY strong.

Steve, as you may be able to see from the photos, I had to ditch the airbox snorkel in favor of the Fabspeed open airbox lid(which had to be cut down to clear the turbo spoiler hinge / schock on the passenger side). I do plan to install a cold air box assembly in the next few weeks.

Wow, that thing is a monster. Nice craftsmanship, too. Very pretty. Is it appreciably heavier than the stock one?

John,

Not much heavier than stock. Overall, with the removal of the top angled vanes in the spoiler (which is a surprisingly heavy piece), and the top panel bolted to the factory intercooler, I'd say that the new intercooler saves weight.... And it just looks cool..

BTW, thanks for the info on the shifter. I'm going to give FVD a call tomorrow.

Very manly! Did you do anything to seal around the edges, so the airflow all goes through the cooler?

911/Q45,

I don't have the engine compartment sealed yet. First I just wanted to get the thing mounted and the mesh screen in place (this was a trick by itself). I plan to fabricate a cold air box, and then I will seal up the opening.

Thanks Steve. I am glad there are knowledgable guys like you on the board! You helped me get away from what could have been a bad situation. It is running even better than before. Thanks for all your help. I looks like you have been busy with a water injection system recently.....

Sure have been. Always looking for a way to keep thing in the safe zone. FWIW the same kit will work for your car. I would just need to come up with a different inlet.

I have heard from some people that the vaned grill restricts air flow to the intercooler, but I thought that the way the vanes were angled looked fairly precise and that Porsche did that for a reason (other than to stop debris hitting the I/C cores) what are your thoughts now you have had a good look at it.
Can tyou keep us updated on your "cold air box" solution

I look to me like the vaned grill is more visual than functional. While I have nothing to back it up, just looking at it I would think that I would think if Porsche was looking for perfomance, this would not be it. I think it was more, as you say, to protect debris from getting into the engine compartment, and to block looking into the engine compartment. The thing does weigh a lot though, probably 8 lbs. or so.

FYI,

I installed a thermal probe and measured the temp of the outlet air on a large Intercooler, and the Turbo "S" tail made a big difference in cooling. The Turbo "S" tail dropped the temp down considerably when I was on the track. It seems it forces much more air into the intercooler than the stock TT tail.

Thanks Rick. If FedEx hadn't destroyed my shipment, I would have a Turbo S wing on today. I figure as soon as FedEx pays the claim, I can get a new wing and just install the spoiler lid that I modified so I'll will be all set. Thanks for the confirmation.

Oddly since you bring it up, I have noticed a reduction in engine temps with the new intercooler, and it is even getting hotter here in the Bay Area. Go figure.
