Cool Clutch weight savings poll

I thought it might be interesting to see what Rennlisters think about a LWF and clutch assembly. How effective is it, how does it impact our performance.

Guess what is the effective weight savings that you realize when you move from a stock clutch to a racing clutch..Weight savings of assembly: 12lbs.

What you are looking for is what sort of incremental weight would your engine need to push forward in 1st gear when you move from a race setup to a stock setup...?

No answers please other than on the poll.

Chris, these are approximations, you can pick the closest answer and post here a number if you wish

not sure if I should say anything but there's a link from another thread on the 993 board that gives the answer! I assumed it was an 'unsprung' weight type of thing and it's sort of correct...
Depends on what gear you're in - that's why Jean specified 1st gear!

Yes I posted the poll before that post, quite a coincidence. Funny, I had posted the same question on that thread but then deleted my post in order to post it here as a poll. It seems like it got picked up.

I think the answer is too interesting for it to be within a different thread. First gear is 209lbs! I also did some acceleration simulations and the results however are not really tangible. First gear being so short, you would gain probably a tenth up to 40mph or so... Not bad though. Other gears there will be hardly any difference.

The data that I have is from Sachs, and I am posting here their calculations for clutches that apply to Porsche. I applied the same to our 993TT gearing a few months back and was planning to post it, this is the opportunity.

Thanks for taking the poll.

Ah, this is one of the reasons LWF/clutch upgrade is strongly recommended by some tuners for their power upgrade kits....when others don't for similar power outputs.

I know, you dont have to rub it in. Out of 10 cars I have owned, this is my second slushbox (had a Ford Lightning), too bad it is in my first P-car...oh well. There will always be a next P-car, hopefully the 930 or 964T.

is this why a rear wheel conversion is supposed to be better? even though you lose traction in the 1st 2 or 3 gears? overall is it worth the sacrifice of all wheel drive?

Traction doesn't alter that much with RWD, a sudden torque delivery will break traction on 4WD almost as easily, the difference is (IMO) that about 60lb/ft of one's torque is "soaked up" in the 4WD system in driving the propshaft and front diff therebye lowering the overall torque which the engine can put to the ground.
The benefits are:
Effectively about 10% more power/torque (compared to 4WD)
Steering feel to die for - makes 4WD feel positively agricultural
~45kg weight loss which helps traction as well as many other aspects of driving.
Negatives are:
The extra power/torque gained make the car more "lively" which some may not be prepared for
Powersliding is harder to achieve with the same finesse
You can't call your car a "turbo 4"

I might be inclined to put this last one in the "benefits" section.
