Post Spark Plug Wires

This is a repost that I originally put up on the 993 board.

I've seen a number of posts recently about the high costs of plug wires for the 993. I had the same problem with my BMW 850. Dealer wanted $1,200. I found the manufacturer that BMW uses in the US and went to them directly. They cost me $350. They use all the Beru components, etc. They make a set for the 993 for $325, and while they do not list it, they will sell a set for the 993TT for $165..

Kingsborne Website

Standard disclaimer that I have no affiliation with this firm. I just figure if we have to get new plug wires, by getting good quality and saving significant money, we will have more $$$$ for modifications!!!!

Thanks Bob. Its this kind of sharing that makes Rennlist great. So... I have 53,000 miles on my TT. I'll bet I still have the original wires. Sounds like I should swap them out BEFORE I get any problems? What do you think?

Swap them at the 60k service when your in there doing the plugs anyway. As long as they are working fine now.

Come on Steve, this is another opportunity to take apart the top of your engine. I do it so often, I am installing a zipper. No seriously, as I have taken the ducting and fan out more times than I wish to count, I'm installing this bypass pipe.

web page

A heater is not really a requirement here in the Bay Area in Spring, Summer, and Fall (and a lot of times Winter)...

Just do it, and while you are there I have heard that if you remove the throttle body and have the bottom cross chamber drilled straight through, that is it good for a sizable HP gain.. Always another project down the horizon.

OK, you guys. I'm gonna buy the wire set, then come knocking on your doors for the heater bypass and throttle body gizmos. Once I get the intercooler off, can I change plugs myself? It sure was a snap back in the olden days (1970 911E).

Seriously, thanks. I think.

Bill,

I am just waiting for the Euro bumper to be delivered today (it is already painted), then it is off to Racers Group tomorrow to deinstall the Unichip. Then I should be OK for small projects while keeping the car drivable. Along the way there is a new intercooler coming, along with some elecronic wastegates, new high spark coil, plug wires, and some other trinkits...

I called Kingsborne to ask about 993 TT wires, and they were very uncertain if they carried them. They were pretty sure its a twin-plug engine, and I'm pretty sure its not. They will research this and call me back tomorrow. Twin plug? I wish.

What IC did you end up with?

I have not heard much about better plug wires for 993TTs, but I know in the older 911s, Magnecor makes a wire set that is about half the price of OEM and considered to be much better.

Steve,

There is a guy there that has an Australian or South African accent. He always seemed to be the only one that knew anything. He said that they could just maek up a set and since there were only 6 wires, the it would be about half of the 12 wire set or $165. These guys are BIG into relabeling to the manufacturers, and don't sell as much to the public. But I can tell you that their products are top notch.

Bill, I couldn't wait for your cooler any longer , so I thought I would try a Protomotive intercooler . We'll see how it goes. As far as plug wires, I bought a set of 10.4mm wires from Huntley Racing ($270) along with a nology coil and nology power amplifier. Most people want stock factory type wires. I tend to live out on the edge a tad bit

Huntley does sell a set of Taylor 8mm wires with factory Beru fittings. These run around $300 for the 993TT. Sorry I missed you on Sunday. Hopefully we'll have another drive soon....

I hear a lot of good reviews for Magnecore. Steve Weiner of Rennsport is a big fan of this to.

I know my opinion probally doesn't matter since i'm a honda/hot rod guy. But I love magnecores wires, they are top notch, I have them in my honda drag car and my daily driver.

I just put Magnecors in my 87 Carrera and there was actually a noticeable difference. I was surprised as my car is already in a great state of tune, but the new wires smoothed it out even more (plus they look really cool). I do not think Magnecor makes a set for either the 993 or the 993TT.

I ordered my wires from Clark at Apex Performance His prices were far less than others for Magnecor.

He also sells Momo and Corbeau seats - here is a picture of a Corbeau seat that when ordered in black leather looks a lot like the 993 sports seats (click on the black leather picture at the bottom): http://www.corbeau.com/brochure/VX2000.shtml.

I believe his price for a pair was like $1200! You can get these with a sub belt hole. I am thinking of ordering a pair for my 87 as we use it for DEs and I would like to install 5 or 6 point harness.

Scott,

Everyones opinion counts. I was a hotrod guy from way back (Camaros, Trans Ams, Ram Air IV engines, 383 CI small blocks, 12:1 compression, nitrous, I better stop I'm getting excited). Working on Porsches I find takes some out of the box thinking to solve problems. For the guys that have only worked on Porsches, I feel they are truely at a disadvantage. Every Porsche guy should have a Summit Racing catalog and figure out how to use some of the cool stuff in there....
