Default O.T. - Are 996TTs really this cheap?

I haven't been following the 996TT market, but I happened to check out Craigslist this morning and saw a 2001 w/ 50K on it. Looks like it has 6 speed, sport seats and the guy said no accidents. $56K asking from a private party. Has the price of 996TTs finally crossed under the price of 993TTs?

Made too many of them and many are dumping them for the newer model. look how many are for sale on Ebay.

2001's had some issues. I looked at a 2001 last year with 17k miles, 6 speed, full carbon fiber interior, nice color combo all leather interior and much more, they were asking $65 at a local perfomance shop on consignment. So for a 50k mile car and the new 997TT out I would say yes.

I didn't buy it because frankly I found it a bore to drive. Very nice capable car that can handle some situations better than my 964T but just not very exciting. Give me a slightly moded 964T or 993TT anyday over a 996TT.

crossed under for equal mileage at least 6 months ago for the 100% of the 2001's and at least 50% of the 2002s. I've considered going for a 2001 or 2002 996TT just so I can take it to Ruf for a Turbo R conversion. They're supposed to be really easy to mod reliably

I was offered an '02 loaded with 27k miles this weekend for $63k. Let me know if anyone is interested - timing wasn't right for me.

Cobalt, try driving a slightly modded 996tt, it might just change your mind. A 500hp 996 with a nice suspension can scare the s#$t out of you.

I am sure it would although I prefer old school where the closest thing to traction control is ABS and LSD. I'm more a GT2 guy myself but I need the rear seat.

I hear ya. I'd get a GT2, but I dont trust myself with it. I like having that Please Save Me (PSM) computer every now and again. Im pretty sure if I didnt, I would have ended up at the bottom of the malibu canyon on several occasions.

I too noticed the crossover a while back. At these prices, the 996TT is really tempting as a daily driver. What kind of miles are people putting on them? I would love to hear a report of 100K+... As I understand it, the TTs are pretty stout and reliable like the 993. Properly maintained and not abused, what is the potential longevity of a 996TT engine and transmission?

TomF,

No first-hand data, but I would expect the basic powertrain reliability to be the same as the 993TT. The problematic parts are the radiators and related hardware that seems to need some attention/replacement. The electronic wizardry seems to have decent reliabilty. There is scary lots of HP to be gotten from a water-cooled, 4-valve, twin-cam engine. Add suspension and exhaust, and turn off the nannies. And no, I'm not trading.

I owned a 2001 turbo and it was a nice car. Fast and could be driven daily. Then I was thrown the keys to a 2003 X50 version. Holy s**t. It is extremely fast. 500hp ones are common.

IMO, the 996tt will be a even greater bargin within 24months. I will go out on a limb as say you will see $45-$50k for MY01-03. Mileage and service will be the variable but there will be no better bang for the buck and what a DE toy w/o PSM.

The current prices almost make it a no brainer.
what they need:
Short shift kit (B&M) or Porsche
Nice Exhaust like a Europipe (stockers sound lame)
ECU upgrade (so they ran at about 1.0 bar)
Suspension Upgrade (PSS9, Cross Jic, Moton, etc... the sky is the limit)
the watercooler as mentioned above has unlimited potential as far as power

Hey Cobalt,

Love your car...wish I could have 2 Turbos, cause the 1994 3.6 would be 2nd my pick. Lots of folks seem to think the 996TT is uninspiring....In stock, out of the box form it is a competent supercar....a little remote perhaps....however, when you get the suspension tuned, and that motor pumping out 500hp...and a few other bits and pieces...the car is really unbelieveable, and quite inspiring....As for PSM...it is a life saver, and highly useful.....going up canyons, with 0 runoff room...having friends drive your car, driving a race track for the first time, driving in rain, gravel, and snow....it pays for itself quite nicely.

No other car I know of can cover 3000 miles, through the Rockies, pouring rain, show up at the racetrack, crank out respectable lap times, and turn back around....amazing vehicle...all in stereo, air conditioned comfort.
