Post Temperature Gauge

Can anyone confirm that this is normal?

After starting my 97 TT, the Oil temp gauge is of course pegged below the 2 lowest hash marks. SLowly as the temperature increase, the needle start to move to normal operating levels. Here is what strikes me as odd:

The needled continues to move all the way up to the 3rd hash mark, the one at about 4 o'clock, then remains there for a few seconds then immediatly drops down to normal levels, in between the first 2 and the 3rd, about 4:30. After this initial surge, the needle never moves close to the 3rd mark (obvioulsy under heavy driving , the needle is more sporatic)

My guess is that there is a threshold temp that kicks on the fan. By the time the fan kicks in during the first warm up, the needled exceeds the normal level for a brief moment.

Any ideas?

It's a good idea to test to see if your thermostat/resistors are working properly. I've installed a oil cooler switch so that I can run the high speed while stuck in traffic.

Here are some pics:

This is totally normal operation. When you start the car, it will only use the oil in the engine until the temperature rises to the correct point. After that, the thermostat opens the oil cooler and all the oil in the system is used, causing the dip in temperature that you describe. I.e. don't worry and just enjoy!
