Post Temperature In Engine Compartment??

Does anyone know how hot it gets in the engine compartment of a 993?

Robert

I have been told that the 'normal' engine operating temp is around 120-150 deg celcius. I did have a fault code on the OBD which was triggered at 124 deg whilst driving on the freeway. As you know the engine temp of the 993 varies alot depending on conditions. As for the temp in the engine bay that is anyones guess. It would not surprise me if it reached over 200 deg c. I would be interested to find out what the redline temp actually is? Does anyone know?

Robert, 9ONE1,

I did some temperature testing of a K&N pod filter set-up in the 993TT.
The results were interesting.

Ambient Temp: 28 C (82F)
Temp probe mounted to exterior of pod filter.

At 100kph [60mph] the recorded temp was 2-3 C [5F]higher than ambient.
At 60kph [37mph] the temp was [on average] 4-5 C
higher than ambient.
Traffic lights proved the most interesting part.
The temp climbed dramatically.
After being stopped for 90sec, the temp was [on average] 14 C [24F] higher.

Temp returned to 5 C above ambient within 30 sec after accelerating to 60kph.
[says a lot about the engine bay airflow !]

30min after stopping the car, engine bay temp had increased to over 30 C above ambient.
[over double ambient !!]

As a side note, at 6100rpm, the engine fan is drawing 1210 litres/ sec !

Whilst moving, the engine bay temp is always going to be [substantially] lower than "engine" temp, or else the whole air cooling process just won't occur......

cheers guys

Very interesting! Thanks for the info. Do you have any idea what the redline engine temperature is? Where do you live in OZ? Looks like the Story Bridge on your website.

Did you gain any noticeable performance gain with the open airfilter element? or did it affect your accel. times?

Your results might suggest that once driving it aint that bad, I bet its about the same as stock, or maybe better, haven't anyone thought about heat soak on the factory air box? But what about when accelerating from a red light? does it feel different?

I once had a auto BMW 3 series with a open air filter, and in mid summer when standing at a red light you couldn't accelerate strongly, the air underneath the bonnet was so damn hot the car couln't do a thing. a lot different than in december. oh well, just curious.

LOL - Good call !
I alternate between Brisbane and the coast.

The throttle response was sharper with the exposed pod filter.
THe throttle response was even sharper again with the intercooler cover removed.
That said & done, I intend to build a heat shield to sit under it.

cheers
