I love my 993tt. It has become pretty much just a track car at this point. It is conservatively modded but almost too stiff for the street. To me it is the best looking car porsche ever made (the 930 a close second). These cars are defintely holding their value and their performance is still right in line with a lot of newer and higher hp cars. For me, I wouldn't even consider the new 997tt - despite the reports of how fantastic (and fast) it is. However, the one that keeps me thinking is the 997GT3.

Can you elaborate on "top end rebuild" Is more work required on the TT's than on a NA 993 vis a vis "top end rebuilds" ?
Thanks
Jack

There is more to risk on a 993TT engine. If you drop a valve or eat a piston, the cylinder head cost is/are $1,800 each. To rebuild the topend on a 993TT is more involved and does require more dollars in parts and labor..

Thanks Kevin. Could you elaborate on "more involved" and more needed parts.

Thanks
Jack

You have turbochargers, extra oil lines and sump tanks, boost hoses, extra sealing rings. Are you looking at a car that needs a topend? Or are you worried about future repairs?

My buddy had the top end redone at manhattan porsche to the tune of 11k, when he brought it in it was smoking alot on startup. The high cost of repairs is what has spooked me on 993TT's. I make decent money, but don't want to pour it out every 6 months. I decided to pass on the car, he's keeping it as a track toy.

Kevin: You mention turbos in your last answer. When a TT has a "top end" rebuild, are the turbos always or usually or sometimes rebuilt?

My question stems from reading the ads for a number of TT's fo sale that mention a top end rebuild without listing all the specifics.
Thanks again
Jack

Kevin would know for sure, but I believe it just refers to heads/valves/guides and springs. The bottom end and turbos are left as is. I believe 100% of 993TT's will eventually need a top end rebuild do to the valve guides.

Being that the engine required a topend due to worn parts. Leakage of oil and compression would put added stress on the turbochargers. Most shops doing the work would recommend the turbochargers rebuilt. If a burnt valve was found, there would be a very high probability of turbine wheel damage.. The cylinders are usually check for correct bores (perfect roundness) If out of spec or worn you would require new cylinders and pistons.
