Just had ppi done at Squires in Seattle. he found the following leakdown numbers (cylinders 1-6) 4%,4%,4%,90%,89%,40% and said he thought the valves were bent, probably from a missed shift. The car apparantly runs fine, slight vibration at idle but drives fine. The dealer says if those are the leakdown numbers the car should barely run, my mechanic agrees. Squire says it could have bad numbers on all cylinders and run fine especially since it is turbo. I am at the moment scared to buy this car unless the owner fixes the engine (approx. $15k, depending). Has anyone driven their car with poor leakdown, and how did it run? any opinions would be helpful.

15K is cheap when you have to replace a head and pistons and liners..

You're asking the wrong question. You shouldn't give a rat's *** how it idles or runs. If you were just been told by an oncologist that there's a mass the size of Cuba up your *** would it matter how great you feel lying down? Those numbers are the most accurate indicator of an engine's condition and how it's been treated. If you can use it as a negotiating tool then have at it but I would want either $25k, or him to tear it down and then appraise the costs to repair. Expect the tranny to have issues too. So how many miles on it and at what asking price?

Please let all of us know which car this is. It would be helpful for someone that might miss the opportunity of doing a PPI before they buy, yes some people still buy witthout one.

I think that this is the black car at Park Place Motors in Bellevue. The asking price is $76k! Ouch. Correct me if I am wrong...

The future court case should be interesting since it's now documented that the dealership has knowledge of a major defect. hehe.

It is the car Tom F was mentioning. Owned by a former Seahawks running back. I did negotiate a reduced price from the asking before ppi. If anyone needs specifics pm me. As of now I am off the car unless they redo the engine. Based on previous sales, previous discussions I believe if the engine checked out fine it should be worth around 70. Also found some fault codes with the ac on the car. Thank gd for leakdown tests. q: Squires charged for full ppi even though he didn't do compression test as leakdown test showed poor results...this seems wierd since he did less work than expected...not a big deal maybe should have saved $100...but the principle of it doesn't sit right with me...I probably won't do anything for a 100 dollars...what do you guys think? also ppi was $500. does that seem high? (I'm just curious what you guys think, not complaining as it saved me thousands of dollars and headaches)money well spent.

$500.00 is the average.. There was no sense to do the compression test after the failed leakdown. Just ask Squire for the $100.00 back.. T

But where was the leakage? This is important when doing this test. Just as much as how much, where from. Changes the cost of repair big time.

Dealer redid the leakdown and had similar results. so car can seem like it is running fine but with lots of leakage.
Don't know where it is leaking. Mechanic thinks it is bent valves.

90% leakage should be easy to identify the source.....
