I test drove this S4 before my girlfriend got her A4 (1999) and it was pretty quick when onboost. Probalby not terribly expensive either and better in the NYC.

I believe the newer S4 cars are NA and they get alot heavier - that said, ive never driven one.
If you can find one of those in the NY metro area that hasn't been stolen, you're doing well. The earlier models had problems with the turbos failing, too, @ about $6K to fix!

i have a 2005 audi S4 avant and a 2004 A6 avant. me normal S4 is very similar to anniversary s4. i WILL NEVER buy another audi. i have never seen ANYTHING depreciate as fast as my S4. who says lose 20k in first year. more like 30k in first year. the car is not geared right and doesn't feel like a V8, it has no grunt until 6k rpm or higher. and it thinks that gasoline is free. i get 16mpg combined, if i drive like a human being. if i even pushed it a bit, the fuel economy goes way down.

i take 993tt over ANY audi, including the RS4 anyday. in fact, i take just about any german car over RS4, even a vw bug.

Ummm ... if it depreciated $30K in one year, a 2005 should be available for about $25K...

I too have a 2005 1/2 A$ s line for my daily driver it has 15kmiles and is fully loaded with all S options. Its a great daily driver. My 993tt sits in the garage until friday morning thne i fire it up. Its difficult with two cars not to take the tt everyday but one must discipline himself. I recommend the audi for a daily driver 993tt for wekeends and only put a maximum of 5-7k miles a year on the tt.

Thats the story of my life

My wife and I bought an 2005 S4 and sold it within a year. It was powerful and fun, but very boring compared to the TT. I would not want my TT to be my primary car, however...as it does require TLC/downtime on occasion. The S4 suspension was stiffer than my pss9s (which drove my wife nuts) and the variable power assisted steering was kinda goofy...the car seemed very "plasticy" to me. We had an small oil leak since day one in the S4 that none of the genius warranty mechanics could figure out...so we bailed on them...went BMW....much happier.

Which reminds me..I have brand new S4 18 rims/summer tires and a full set of Audi S4 allweather mats collecting dust if anyone needs them...............I didn't give them up when trading the car in...HAHA

Oh god can't even imagine anyone test driving a 993TT and would go off to buy an S4 thereafter. My advice to you is not to test drive the turbo. Because once you do you'll be sick in love like all of us on here. I drive an Audi to work daily but can't wait to get out it and get into my turbo every chance I got.

anyone else have any thoughts on the older platfrom s4 (2000-01) with the turbo motor? i am impressed with the A4 of this vintage for a daily driver - didnt feel cheap , perhaps the s4 would be fun and still 'disposable'.

robroy, why do you suggest many where stolen? i saw alot for sale when my gf was looking for the a4 of the same era.

pretty much. i had 25k miles on mine in 14 months or so, sold for 30k, and took a loooooong time. car was cherry, easy going silver on black, not love or hate blue/yellow. 6 speed.

well cared for, no mods, no boost increase, these turbo motors are very strong. but if PO screwed around with it, dont touch it with a 10 foot pole.

wow, lots to reply to!

cost isn't that much of a factor, and the 25quattro actually looks different than the A4, which IS important. it's our garage in our building, so other people handling it isn't a problem. i love the 993, but it's not cost effective to have two cars, even a second cheap(er) one (add ~$250 per month for parking spot + insurance + lease/payments). i'm sure the 993 would bring the widest grin to any face, but the two nearby on autotrader are both somewhat modded, and that white/blue '96 is heavily modded, not what my mother needs. it also adds to difficulty in maintenance and less reliability. not to mention the lack of a backseat (yes, i'd bring my dog in a porsche... shoot away).

i like the V8 S4s seem better due to ease in maintenance (lubrication systems for turbos/intercooling/etc.). the car really feels solid, handles well, and has a predictable and linear power band. it does sip (read: chug) the gasoline, but a lot of cars do. i think this would be the best car for my mother right now as she does rely on it to commute out to Long Island most days. i guess the only thing left to do is wait for the accountant to get back to us on whether leasing/or buying is better for business write-offs...

anyway, feel free to continue commenting as everything you guys say is pretty interesting, and hopefully i'll have a p-car of my own someday...

Just saying that the B5 S4 is one of the most commonly stolen vehicles in the tri-state area. All parts were interchangable with the A4, so they were stripped by thieves who sold the parts to the ricer community.
