Default checking oil in 993tt

This may sound silly, but i don't know how to check to oil in my 993tt, it seems i cant get past the oversixed intercooler. Can anyone let me know where the dipstick is?

It's actually funny how hard checking the oil is, especially on the TT. The dipstick is in the same old place... way off on the pass side of the engine compartment... up towards the front of the bay under the rear window area. You do know, I hope, that the oil is checked with a hot (not warm) engine, at idle, on a level surface. As on any 911, the dipstick is hard to read.... the oil should be half way up the "twisty" portion. The entire twisty portion only represents a quart or two, so don't overfill. Once you get a good reading on the dipstick, you can view your oil level gauge to see how welll "calibrated" it is. The gauge is very handy, but the dipstick is the gospel.

Adding oil is even tougher... the fill cap in also on the pass side, about midway in the bay, and hard to reach beacuse of the intercooler. You will need a funnel.

You shall be henceforth known as "the man who couldn't find his dipstick". The dipstick is about 6" further toward the front of the bay... toward the rear window... high up. Mine has a yellow handle. Its snug up near the body work, not near the engine. Take another look.

sfbanchs: Well you found the oil fill cap. From there start moving your eyes up the engine bay and you will see a small yellow handle. I hope this helps.

Make sure the engine is nice and warm when you check the oil. Don't add any oil if it is between the lower and upper mark. I tell most people to run the oil level near the bottom mark.

Yep....stick you finger into the inlet and pull out the flexible extension....makes adding oil much easier...I use this in conjunction with a funnel.....

Did I just say "stick your fingers into the inlet"....where are the Beavis and Butthead comments?

What is the amount of oil between the lower and upper mark? What are the negatives of keeping the oil at the upper mark? Thanks

The dip stick sits horizontally. If you are looking for a vertical dip-stick (like most cars) you'll never find it.

It is actually quite snug, so it is an effort to pull it out (at least mine is). Also, it's almost a mile long, so be prepared to keep pulling until you are one block from home. It is quite a contraption if you asked me. Also, it is impossible to read in direct sunlight. (I know my old eyes are going, but my daughter could not read that either)

Good luck.

sfbanchs,

As you can see, a simple question like "how to check my oil" yields a twisted and complex response. When your dipstick read at the top, did your oil level gauge also read at the top? Its reassuring to get a feeling about the gauge calibration. Your car is full of oil, but not overfull. You should be fine. If it uses a bit of oil and gets to the midway point, I think that is preferred. That may only be half a qt or so. How many qts for a refill? How many filters are you changing? Are your draining the turbo lines? Are you draining the oil cooler (s)? See? Another butt simple question with no simple answers.
