Default Another short shift question for the 993TT

I spoke to a sales rep. at Automotion (Performance Products) and they stated the B&M Short Shift they carry will not fit a 993TT(only a C2, C4). Is this true? If so, does anyone know another aftermarket short shift that's good for our cars?

Thanks,
Mark

Mark,

As far as I know, The Porsche RS shifter (also sold by FVD) is one of the few alternatives. Ruf also offers one, but I haven't investigated it. The Porsche RS shifter requires that you deform (large hammer) the tunnel undercover so that the shifter can extend lower than it does on the stock shifter. This alone tends to deter some folks. The RS shifter does shorten the throws by a bit (20%???) and adds a bit of effort. I liked it on my previous 993TT, and I have the shifter for Rufus, but haven't had it installed. Rufus now shifts like butter, so I'm not sure I will.

<edit>: I'm a bit surprised about the information you got from Performance Products... the problem with finding a short shifter on the 993TT has to do with the AWD, so it should affect the C4 and C4S as well.

RS shifter is less expensive than the BM. I find mine no more effort in the shifts over the stock one, but thats just me. V-Bob had a group buy on them at one time I think.

Thanks Steve for the info. I will do more research on the RS Shifter as an option. Do you recommend any others? I too was surprised by what Performance Products said. If that is the case, then B&M should label a disclaimer if they do not have one already stated for their 993 short shift.

Best,
Mark

I got my RS shifter from ViperBob...a regular poster on this board. Email him to see if has any more. It was REALLY cheap. So cheap, I don't care about installing it, and if you knew what a cheap bastid I was, you'd know this was a real deal.

The factory RS parts for the s/s in an AWD works the best ( so far ) I have tried aftermarket (FVD), and it works, but the factory stuff from Carnewal was the easiest install so far.

Most of these guys selling stuff are clueless. The RS shifter is the one to use. Least expensive, and works great. You will need to clearance you tunnel though under the car.

Viper B

How much does it run? And is there any documentation on the tunnel "modification"?

Just get a nicely weighted hammer and wack the transmission tunnel at the appropriate place to create a hollow...(I got that tip frm Steve)..scares the hell out of your mechanic if he's not done it before (like mine). ;-)

How does the RS compare to the FVD SSK?

Thanks

I think all you need on a tt is the shift lever, part number 964 424 015 08. About $60 or thereabouts from your friendly Porsche dealer. No Porsche part number for the lump hammer!

I just had my dealer's mechanic install the FVD/RS shifter in mine. He had to "dimple" (dent) the tunnel and play with the box a little to get reverse to work also, but it turned out great-it shortens the throw slightly (the stock throw was way too loose and excursions way to great-I would hit my knuckles against the dash shifting to 3rd and 5th), albeit not as much as with the B&M installed on my 996TSCab.

I Have one too - From Viper Bob.

I intalled it only for a few days - then took it out.... with my continuous ripple strip antics - I was worried about it sitting lower than the car.

I am in AU - but it will be on Fleabay within the week!

Simon.
