You also have to remember to cool the Turbos down before turning of the engine. Doesn't take long, you just need to get used to it.
Quality is excellent as it should be. Check http://www.993tt.com for common issues and buyer guide.
Just don't get too excited about the car. Most common problem is to walk-away from bad deals, once a prospective buyer drives the car, it's quite easy to sell.
I have a 97. Having a 930 before this car I can say that the TT is more reliable. However it's more complicated and when you get a car that monkeys worked on you'll have to pay to sort it out. As Woodster states, keep 5k on the side : ) I bought mine with 32k on it . It has 58 now. I used to drive it all over the place. Now it's a bit more track oriented but I'd still go pick up groceries in it. Great car. I'll keep it forever. Good luck with the purchase. I work in downtown Mahantten. My friend does too and he has a 96 tt a Rennlisters past love. I'd be happy to look at the car if it's local. Cheers, Andy
It's amazing how much sh-t idiots can mess up. Mostly leaving little things undone or missing !! You what makes my experience even better .....The dealer did the brunt of the messing up !!! So I had to pay a lot to get the car straightend out. I had lots of help from Steve Weiner at Rennsport Systems and Joel Reiser of Reiser Technick.
According to my specialist Northways(Ray) who is located a few miles from the Importer and I will add his chiei mechanic to this who worked for AFN Reading until last year. As a rule the Turbo versions of all models always tend to be very reliable due to the amount of over engineering that goes into them due to their capabilities.
They both think the 993TT is one of the most reliable ever made(he owns one), it has a couple of common problems ie 1st gear shaft, the weeping cams and the faulty Mahle oil filter(USA) which allows oil into the turbo's. Another good sign in the UK is most of the specialists are either driving 993TT's or 993RS(appreciating) and the fastest dappreciating car over here is the 993GT2.
The main thing is condition and history and making sure its not been abused. One good way of checking with private owners, is to get them to take you for a drive, see how they drive the car, its not a good sign if they show of the 'turbo's before the engine has warmed up and they dont let the car cool down after a spirited drive.
Good luck you wont regret it if you find a good one.
